Subject: Rathbone's Ramblin'
rathbone wrote:...
Talking of creativity, a couple of years ago Epykat, Sunnyporty and I were thinking about setting up a website called RAW Art in order to get stuff that we were doing to a wider audience. That never came off, partly because the domain name was already in use by someone in Australia and partly because Epykat found an outlet through Cove. However, I am sure that we are not the only ones who paint, do craft things, write or make music. Does anyone else think that there might be merit in setting up a “Creative Porty” forum on here where people can display their talents? Just a thought.
Great idea, do you want to start the ball rolling? Just post in this forum, I'll move it to a new forum later.
Edit to add:
Epykat wrote:I'm Epykat and I'm ..... I sometimes teach classes in jewellery making and knitting and have been toying with the idea (with a couple of other locals) of trying to set up some kind of Portobello Craft Co-Operative whereby other local artists and crafters could get together and swap skills, do some talks/classes and maybe come up with some ideas on how to get our work out to a wider local audience, so if anybody is interested please let me know.
Thanks/L

Okay - I'll bite.
I write a bit and do patchwork and quilting. Not so much of the latter, since the writing bug bit me again after a hiatus of several years and i am now addicted once again, doing about 2 - 3000 words a day. Every day! My latest piece began on 16 December and is currently at over 70,000 words. Sad, but true.

Hi Seashell..... Not in the least bit sad. I write like that as well. Start posting it on here and see how people react.
Wangi..... thank's for the offer. What I was hoping to do was to encourage others to start posting their efforts, not create another Rathbone's doing the Running thread, so I'll soft pedal my own stuff at this stage. The Creative forum could accommodate your photos, for instance, EpyKat's craft work, Seashell's writing, PCC's planning submissions and other creative works.......
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

I'm Epykat and I'm an alco.....no, I'm not really, but I do do lots of other things. Like, em...wallpapering and making jewellery and stones with pictures on and lots of other things. I have a few guises, the latest being Elle & Pea which can be found both online at
http://www.folksy.com/shops/elleandpea and
http://www.elleandpea.etsy.com and also in COVE 250 Portobello High Street.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I'd be interested in getting involved in something like this that's local to Portobello. We do screen printing and textiles under the name of Through the Trees. A Portobello Craft Co-operative sounds like a great idea. Here's a link to our Facebook page:

That sounds really good. I used to belong to a patchwork group in Midlothian, but can no longer attend due to transport difficulties. I'd love to be able to meet up with other people and maybe also have space to do things like lay out quilt tops for layering up with batting and backing prior to quilting. I'd also be happy to help anyone else wanting to get started, although I am by no means an expert. If I knew how to post a photo, I'd put up some shots of a few quilts I've made in the past. I'm also a keen knitter, and have dabbled in cross stitch.

And where better to spend it than COVE? They do a rather swanky line in bits of beach pottery........

I dabble in many crafts but my main one of the moment is needle felting.

I would be up for getting a crafty group going, I am sure I could get my mum involved too she makes a lot of thrifty quilts and bags.
Maybe even a stitch and bitch or the more conservative knit & natter.

So, is anything happening? Is there a meeting planned? My neighbour does screen printing, and my wife dabbles in various crafts. For what it's worth, my main craft is wine-making

If you are interested Bob Jefferson has now posted a selection of my stuff in the Porty online gallery. However, in doing so he has blown my cover and destroyed my mystique... you will have to look under David Irving.
For those who were following my adolescent ramblings, there is a painting of the Art College Football Team. I'm the one lower right with the glasses.

You can be as uncouth as you like.
The small gouaches are one off's and for sale through COVE. I don't actually know what price they have put on them. You would have to pop in to find out.
The acrylics and the oil are also one off's,all rather large and I don't want to sell them.
What I said to Bob was that if anyone wanted a copy I'd be quite happy to run off a digital A4 print from the photographs I sent him.
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

Well, the inaugural meeting of Creative Porty went reasonably well! We agreed we'd have a Facebook page (action Nicola) and see if we can get some kind of exhibition space set up (action Gill)....so watch this space for updates.
