Right all you ex PHS pupils! Who can remember the words to the immortal song which EVERYBODY had to learn in Primary 7 otherwise you were not allowed to go the Portobello High School!!!
We'll give it a week then I'll publish the words just to remind you!
(just for interest 4 people at my work can still remember the words unprompted after 25 years!)

Thanks for that. My wife has just 'treated' to me to a rendition of the first two verses. Thankfully she can't remember any more! She says that she would post the words but she is too busy packing as we are off on a short holiday - and I should be helping apparently!
I'm back on Friday so look after the board for me and try to hit the 800 posts mark before I get back!

I've adopted this orphan thread since I know you're all dying to know what the words actually are
Ope Et Consilio
Sing it everywhere you go
Ope Et Consilio
Means by work and advice
It's the motto of Portobello
And the best school in the land
So sing it all together
And work with head and hand
Ope et Consilio
Sing it high and sing it low
Ope et Consilio
Means by work and advice
A big hand for Olive Dale who penned those words many moons ago and drummed them into the young minds of hundreds of Portobello youngsters.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

When was this written? It must have been well after 1971 as I've never heard of it!! I've never even heard any of the rugby boys sing it on buses or even mention it. Mind you, I can understand if they kept quiet about it!!

I first heard it when i moved from Brunstane Primary to Duddingston Primary, which must have been about 1969. It was written by Mrs Dale ( As epy says)who was the music teacher who taught at some of the catchment schools. Plug was already out of here at PHS by that time so its no wonder he ain't heard of it.

It was a sort of rite of passage into secondary

. I was taught it in P7 in preparation so that was about 1973ish. She really was a genius on the lyric side.

I still remember the song very well and I left PHS in the Summer of 75.
