Portobelly Telly
A high-profile meeting of local media tycoons representing Portobello Online, Radio Free Porty and Portobello Reporter took place earlier this evening to discuss 'Portabelly Telly', as I am already bored of calling it.
We sat around chewing fat cigars, drinking Remy Martin and pretending to be Orson Welles for a while and then, when we got bored with that, we thought it would be great if you could send us some video clips.
Yes, I'm talking to you. Most of you have a digital camera and it almost certainly has a video mode, which you rarely use. So, all you have to do is record 30 seconds of video and then send it to us.
It could be 30 seconds of your cat, or your kid, or just about anything. Dig out the manual that came with your camera, find out how it works, shoot some video, copy it onto a CD and stick it through my letterbox at 10 Rosefield Street. Or you could try emailing it, but it's going to be a pretty big file size.
Leave the rest to us and before you know it we will have our very own community internet TV station.
Sorry to put you to all this trouble, but this is an interactive website. You don't get to just sit back and consume it - you have to provide us with content and ideas. We all wanted to be DJs and we made that possible.
So, who wants to be a TV star, or a film director?

Still experimenting, but to whet your appetite here's a sample of what we might be able to offer:
Portobello Sand Sculpture
It's pretty rough. Shot on an old Sony video camera, edited with Windows Movie Maker (very basic but easy to use) and completed with Flash Pro 8. Flash is capable of producing very professional looking video if I ever get to grips with it. Let me know how it plays.

This is video of Margaret and Archie's book signing earlier today. I'm having problems publishing it, so I've just stuck it up as a Windows Media Player file for now.

Raw, unedited footage, using a £99 digital camera. If I can do this, so can you.

At the other end of the scale, here's 4 hours worth of workshop to produce 30+ mins of footage and ultimately (several hours of editing later)3 mins of video which you will need a broadband connection to view. This is the .wmv version with a Flash version to follow. It's a lot of work and probably not sustainable within the context of marriage and family life.
A sustainable future for Portobello?

I'm having great fun with Windows Movie Maker which is bundled free with XP.
everyone's a winner baby
Someone else suggested that Porty's caption should read 'Putting the belly into Portobelly Telly'

Pushing the envelope this time with a 7 minute epic! Ideally, I would like to play video up to a max of 10 mins so I'm interested to know how well this works.
Big Art discussion
How long did it take before you were able to start viewing?
Does it run smoothly or stutter?
Does it play continuously or stop to buffer?
Obviously this will vary according to your connection speed and set up, but it would be useful to get a cross-section of feedback.
