From Maureen Child's most recent Community Council newsletter:
As raised first on the Portobello community web site, there is a proposal to close Phoenix House on Portobello High Street as part of the Department of Work and Pensions' (DWP) Delivery Plan for Edinburgh. I raised this with Gavin Strang MP. Being a Westminster area of responsibility, Gavin has been leading on this issue and is totally opposed to the plan. He feels it does not do justice to the residents in the eastern sector of the city and, having looked at the detail, he finds the proposal 'totally unacceptable'. He has met the district manager of Job Centre Plus for this part of the country, Ben Wilson, and put these points to him at a meeting, which Gavin says was 'constructive'. Gavin says he will continue to pursue the issue vigorously with the DWP to secure a reversal of the proposed closure of Phoenix House.

Yes and no - our jobs are moving probably to glasgow or bathgate so travel will gratly increase - approx 80 people will no longer be spending in portobello sp another knock to businesses - and another 2 empty office spaces - gavin strang is doing his best but i feel sorry for the customers who will lose out and have to travel further for help - i have sent a leeter to him in support of keeping the office open - even tho i may not be working there or working for the department pending redundanciesPorty wrote:Are you disappointed Steffano?
