From Maureen Child's most recent Community Council newsletter:
As raised first on the Portobello community web site, there is a proposal to close Phoenix House on Portobello High Street as part of the Department of Work and Pensions' (DWP) Delivery Plan for Edinburgh. I raised this with Gavin Strang MP. Being a Westminster area of responsibility, Gavin has been leading on this issue and is totally opposed to the plan. He feels it does not do justice to the residents in the eastern sector of the city and, having looked at the detail, he finds the proposal 'totally unacceptable'. He has met the district manager of Job Centre Plus for this part of the country, Ben Wilson, and put these points to him at a meeting, which Gavin says was 'constructive'. Gavin says he will continue to pursue the issue vigorously with the DWP to secure a reversal of the proposed closure of Phoenix House.

Phoenix house and Windsor Place are both to be closed approx in March 2006.

The nearest benefit office would be Musselburgh or Leith Commercial Street.

Gavin Strang is lobbying to keep Phoenix House open.

I work within Phoenix House.

Yes and no - our jobs are moving probably to glasgow or bathgate so travel will gratly increase - approx 80 people will no longer be spending in portobello sp another knock to businesses - and another 2 empty office spaces - gavin strang is doing his best but i feel sorry for the customers who will lose out and have to travel further for help - i have sent a leeter to him in support of keeping the office open - even tho i may not be working there or working for the department pending redundancies

But we have to look on the bright side - it'll give the Council more room to build more flats
OR  how about a community centre and library?

CHANGES TO JOBCENTRE PLUS OFFICES AND HOW TO MAKE A BENEFIT CLAIM

Following the closures of Leith Jobcentre, Portobello Jobcentre and Portobello Social Security Office in March, the new Jobcentre Plus Office at 199 Commercial Street, Leith will now deliver one-stop advice service on jobs and benefits.

Jobcentre Plus at Commercial Street will now serve customers living in the following postcode areas:

EH4 4, EH5, EH6, EH7, EH8 7, EH15 1, EH15 2 and EH15 3.

The new High Riggs Jobcentre Plus office situated at 20 High Riggs serves customers living in the following postcode areas:

EH1 TO EH3, EH4 (excluding EH4 4), EH8 8, EH8 9, EH9 to EH10, EH11 1, EH11 2, EH11 3 (Part of), EH12 0, EH12 5 to EH12 8, EH14 1, EH16 4 to EH16 6, EH17 and EH30.

These changes include access to tailor-made advice from specialist personal advisers on jobs and benefit entitlement to people of working age. As a result of these changes, there are now new procedures in place for people looking to claim benefits.

Customers making a new claim for Jobseekers Allowance (JSA), Income Support (IS), or Incapacity Benefit (IB) should in the first instance call 0845 600 4250.

People who are looking for additional information and job vacancies advice can access the Jobcentre Plus website at www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk , or call their local Jobcentre Plus with general enquiries, or if they have specific benefit or job related enquiries.

Customers can also make appointments with Jobcentre Plus advisers at their nearest offices.

People looking for further assistance can also access the following service numbers:

Existing Income Support claims: 0131 229 4311
Existing Jobseeker Allowance claims: 0131 657 7400
Existing Incapacity Benefit claims: 0131 229 4311
Crisis Loan enquiries: 0800 328 3834
Social Fund enquiries: 0131 657 7400
