Rats I missed the opportunity to get in a pun about a cat and an absurdist playwright...Tom and Jarry.

You do know that certain members of the public name their children with alternative spelling so's it's "exotic"
Look at the varations of Leannes, Kayleighs etc.

So you could have Ehma, Emmaleigh, Dannyel for example.

Must go now and make sure Frogmella is ready for bed.

And some (mostly girls, for some reason  ) change the spelling themselves..several at skool did and my niece too (twice!).

Don't know why - my real name is common to hear but an unusual (but 'legitimate') spelling and is a bit of a nuisance for official stuff (and some of the family still get it wrong  ) so I wonder why people bother making life difficult for themselves!

I was reading in a paper today that several celebrities children with 'silly' names have now changed them to 'normal' ones!

Zowie Bowie went on to call himself Joe and I believe is now Duncan Jones but Moon Unit Zappa seems to have held onto her name.

Like you, Poppy, my real name has legitimate alternative spellings and I've got used to having to go through it letter by letter ( and still have people get it wrong)

By the way I wasn't trying to deride the names Leanne and Kayleigh , got a nipped heid over that, just pointing out how spellings vary look at Catherine, Katherine, Kathryn.

My two youngest have nicknames as do most of their pals.

As my youngest was so lively in utero I suggested Zebedee as a name. Was over ruled :D

i think the silliest name I have come across was when 2 Swedish parents tried to register Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 (pronounced Albin) for their wee boy as a 'pataphysical protest against Swedish name laws. They later tried A ( again pronounced Albin ) and were fined!

A few years back, a colleague showed me an email from a friend in another region saying that he has just discovered his new first year classlist contained a wee girl called Pocahontus. The surname was something like McGlumphie.

I like this one. In fact what happened to this member whom we could not exist without? He has been inactive on-board for some time. Adding a letter to his non de plume only works if you add it at the beginning. It loses something if you add it on at the end.

Unfortunately a true story... a friend works for the Health Service in Glasgow and there is a real Pocahontas McGlinchey

There is also an Annette Kurtin and a Mercedes Bents

The first job I had ... there was a guy called Albie O'Wright worked in the office ... and a secretary called Marion Kind.

Unusual names like mine are one thing ... these are something else!

Of course, Cleopais ... is just getting snobby if you ask me!

Sorry no .... different people I think.

But, when I worked in a Glasgow Theatre some years ago, a stagehand called himself Pierre d'Angouleme.

When someone asked him, "Ur you French n 'at?" He replied, "Um ah **ck!!" Glesgae humour I suppose.

Then again, in Edinburgh at another theatre, the stage manager was called Steve Zodiac.

One of the most unfortunate names I have heard of has to be Chlamydia
According to one of Mr Spoons friends who is a teacher in the Glasgow area there is a child with this name (not sure if they have spelt it this way but certainly pronounced like that ) Wonder if they knew what it meant or just thought it an exotic sounding name

We have a toy meerkat called Chlamydia, and a toy painted hunting dog called Rogers. Rogers-the-Dog, in full.

BTT, someone mistakenly called me Jellybabe last night. Whilst I took it to mean I need to exercise my holiday weight gain , I remained relieved it hadn't become smellybabe.

For some reason I cannot fathom, it appears that Glaswegians like to feminise (??) names by adding "ina", e.g. Murdochina, Angusina, etc!
