Speaking of erections. I was considering a garden erection joke over on the childrens competition thread. How's my weekly censorship allowance at the moment? :D

There's a funny letter in the Metro today about someone from the UK who went to Oslo (where pubs are smoke-free) and, when he asked what the funny smell was, learnt that it was what pubs smell like when not masked by the aroma of smoke - in this case b.o. and toilets.

Eww. I'm not saying I prefer smoke - but what a voyage of nasal discovery we are about to have as we stand on the verge of finding out what Scotland's pubs smell of!

There is a no-smoking pub in Leeds I have been to a few times. It smells mainly of farts, as well as the other things you mention.

So that's what we''ve got to look forward to.

Sounds like one of those pubs that are themed to attract a female clientele. An All Bar One type place. Is there a lot of cackling?

It's the last chance saloon for smokers:

Bennet's Bar in Morningside is advertising a "Smoke til' you Choke" night on Saturday.

Have fun

Au contraire, my dear Porty. My 5 cackling sisters refuse to go in there because of said smell.

It is mainly peopled by cable-knit jumper-wearing, bearded, kipper-eating, be-sandalled real ale lovers.

And that's just the women.

Is that the Arcadia wine bar? AWFUL place! Full of yupees in bad suits trying to look trendy and talking about the latest thing they've bought. Have been in there twice (was hoping first was a one off) and won't be going back.

Very worried if thats what Edinburghs going to turn into.

It was indeed Novastar. In Headingley. Where Lloyds Bank used to be. Sounds like different clientele when you were in from when I've been though.

Better re-re-read,
packed in the coffin nails, don't defend them, I just think those that smoke and raise so much revenue, could be allowed a little public space of their own. They pay extra and die off quicker, after all.

As for the public health argument, I think that's moot, I would imagine there's a lot more victims of passive drinking.

with or without fags, the rant output is about the same, probably too high for my good health and long life....

That'll be the smoking ban on then.

Local UNISON are on strike tomorrow - this action will be supported by the majority of the wardens - so last chance for a fly puff.

You can still smoke in (this list is not exhaustive - I just heard these places on Talk 107) :

Police interview room

Prison cell

...plus a work car if you drive it from home.

If you spot someone breaking the ban and would like to clipe :

nosmoking@edinburgh.gov.uk

If you want to find out about snuff : http://www.snuffbox.org.uk/

If you're really gung ho and fancy some chewing tobacco (and this is pretty much guaranteed cancer) :

http://www.ussmokeless.com/content.cfm?id=49

I am considering quitting and going on the gum - I have seen a nice aniseed/liquorice flavour and might try that. Wish me luck.

My friend's husband arrived home on Friday night, where my friend handed him the Mothers' Day card she'd bought him for his mother, and he said, in a that-reminds-me sort of way, "Oh, we should go out for dinner tomorrow!". Thinking he'd got his days wrong and meant Sunday lunch for her own Mothers' Day celebration, she asked innocently, "Er...why?". He answered, "Because it's the last night I can smoke in the pub."

And she didn't get taken out for MD.

Well, it's now a year on from when the smoking ban was introduced and I must admit it has gone better than I expected.I had thought pubs would find it difficult to enforce the ban, but this doesn't seem to have been the case.

I haven't had a cigarette since Jan 1 2006 and have found it so much easier to avoid temptation because no-one in the pub is smoking (though unfortunately at home, Homer is still smoking).

How has it been for everyone else?

According the yesterday's Sunday Times, the amound of cigarettes sold in Scotland went up last year by about 61,000. So, if the intent was to stop people smoking, then it wasn't very effective!

At least those of us who choose not to smoke arent subjected to breathing in the smoke from these 61,000 extra fags!

That seems to be at odds with today's Herald:

"Scotland's high-profile smoking ban, which came into force in March last year. It's probably too early to measure fully its impact but figures from Imperial Tobacco show tobacco sales fell by about 5% at the time of the ban. Sales continue to be down by 2% to 3%"

Well, it's been a year past January since I stopped too, M and I'm coping fine without fags.

I'm just back from a weekend in Cardiff and I was shocked at how dreadful an experience sitting in a really smoky pub was. I seem to be hyper sensitive to very smoky atmospheres now. My eyes streamed and I couldn't wait to get out of my smoky clothes and wash my hair when I got back to the hotel.

The smoking ban comes into force for Wales next week so maybe the smokers were just going for broke.

Sorry I did test before posting.
Anyway it was about the guy in Dunfermline that got barred from the pub (Thirsty Kirstys I think )for excessive "bottom burps". He blamed the smoking ban saying no one noticed before because of the smoke!

I hope you feel suitably guilty for the misery you inflicted in your smoking days then  . I used to feel like that every time I was in a smoky pub. I love the smoking ban. The times I've been down South in the past year I've really noticed the difference. Only problem for me is the mess the smoker's make by leaving butts all over the pavement outside

Just checked (the article is by Allan Massie). What he actually said was that sales in Scotland rose last year by 61,000 - per week! Not sure how that chimes with the quote from the Herald, but I suspect their quote is for tobacco sales for the whole of UK rather than just smoky Scotland. Which could mean that the ban has actually encouraged people in Scotland to smoke, while they give up in the rest of GB??

It will be interesting to see to see how the ban works out in England. I have a theory that the English are less law abiding than the rest of the UK, remember the poll tax?. It wasn't until it was introduced in England that Mrs T's problems really began. I suspect enforcement of the ban down South will prove more difficult.

I'm delighted that you have held out for that long. I've never tried smoking but I've observed many people try to give it up and fail. Keep it up Marya.
