Mark Scott's latest film, an interview with author of 'Walking on Wheels' author Eva McCracken has just been added. The book details 50 of Eva's favourite rambles in Scotland that are accessible to wheelchair users and includes Portobello Promenade.

The Town Trail video we have been making with John Stewart is currently being edited. Still a lot of work to do on this but we hope to have it complete early next year.

I have a meeting tomorrow evening with Tony King, who has an archive of filmed events in Portobello going back many years. I'm really excited about this and looking forward to making the material available.

Meanwhile, Portobelly Telly's very own Mark Scott is appearing in a Q&A session tomorrow night at a screening of his short film 'Brainstorm' at the Filmhouse Cinema as part of their 'Shoot First' series. Programme starts at 6:15 pm. Another of Mark's films, 'Ship of Dreams' will be added to Portobelly Telly soon.

I love it when people send me their own home-made films for Portobelly Telly. The latest addition comes from Portobello's very own Chris McCluskey:

Well, watching a Christmas tree grow is certainly more interesting than watching grass grow!

Following my meeting with Tony King, I have now begun to digitise his archive material. The early stuff was recorded originally on cine film, then transferred to video. There are hours of footage and it is going to take a long time but it's fascinating stuff and a labour of love from my perspective.

I would like to re-film from the original medium in order to preserve as much of the original quality as possible and I'm hoping to persuade Tony and his wife Anne to provide a narration.

In the meantime, and to whet your appetite, here is a rough edit of what I have got so far.

It's obvious that Tony and Anne had a great deal of fun making these films. With the first film I edited around 30 minutes of footage down to less than five. This next sequence is seven minutes or so of original film, completely unedited, and includes their own hand-made titles.

So take the time machine back to the early 80s and see if you can recognise anyone, maybe even yourself, in the crowd.

What amazes me about Tony's films and the Victorian weekends from these days is the effort that everyone seemed willing to put in. The costumes and props are great and there is obviously a degree of scripting involved. Indeed, at times it seems like Tony was intent on making a period drama.

Tony replaced the poor quality sound on many of his films with a music hall soundrack. On this segment, however, the original sound is preserved.

This edit features the Melville Music Hall Company.

I have now completed the digitisation of the second of three video cassettes and there is currently a total of ten separate films available to view, covering a range of events held in Portobello in the early 80s which were filmed by Tony King.

Mark Scott is back with his latest project, an interview with Edinburgh band Lebowski, featuring Portobello's very own Joss Seex on lead guitar.

Lebowski made it through to the Scottish final of last year's Battle of the Bands, where this interview took place.

This is some rough footage I shot today from the Big Wheel and from the roof of the Town Hall. It was pretty windy up there, which didn't make for easy filming. I'm hoping to get access to a few other vantage points including Portobello High School and Coillesdene House to obtain other interesting views of Portobello.

You did well keeping the camera in focus while moving!
Great job! And look forward to seeing the ones you take from the Joppa end!

I'm terrified of heights believe it or not, so it's difficult to imagine why I have just arranged to go up onto the roof at Straiton Place on Saturday to do some more filming.

So what was where RSM is now? I remember it all being completely gutted to create the new RSM. Was it a frozen food shop? :? (or am I thinking of somewhere totally different  )
