Central Heating

Post by wangi » 10 Oct 2004, 19:34

Can anyone recommend a plumber / central heating engineer to service a boiler?

Thanks, Lee.

Good luck finding one - when you do, we highly recommend the 3 star cover from Scottish Gas - they service you once a year and have to come out if there is a breakdown, all for a monthly fee. They'll only take you on once you're up and running though (I think) but it's a great service.

The only guy I've used before was called "CK Heat" but I don't have his card any more.

And they definitely won't take you on if your boiler is 30 years old and is in a loft that isn't floored and doesn't have a fixed ladder. But hey, it still works!

I am with you on that one Dadaist. I have found the 3 star cover from British Gas to be the biz. It is one of the few insurances that I have ever felt gives value for money and good service.

Also recommend the Scottish Gas service. I took it out last year then this year I was having problems with mine in that it kept firing up then switching off. They were out 3 times and replaced quite a few parts so its more than paid for itself.

Oh well if I didn't say it ecm would have

Oh no I wouldn't have.
I'm all electric so don't get serviced at all.

Once a year would be nice. You should be grateful.

My plumber came up with a whole new way to flood a basement this morning, actually to be more accurate, he came up with it yesterday and we didn't find it til this morning. I can't really explain what occurred as I don't completely understand. Roughly speaking he forgot that there was a big hole in something that reallly needed to be sealed.

I called him and he gave me 2 options, I could switch the boiler off and he would investigate it tomorow (another day with no hot water) or he could come down in 10 minutes............?   :thefinger:

Wangi, would you like his number?

Go with Scottish Gas, Wangi - you get someone who looks and sounds like they know what they're talking about.

After we redid our old kitchen a few yrs ago Scottish Gas eventually put it all right for us and managed to keep the costs down by wangling some of the work through our 3* contract. Weve had three star contracts for um about 16 yrs and will continue as long as poss.

Thanks folks - i''m giving the gas contract a serious think...

But in the meantime I've got the plumber who installed the heating in my old flat coming round - I've no idea why I forgot about him!

WELL actually - i have the gas heating contract. It was great up to the last year.! However the last 7 or so callouts have been because the previous engineer either didn't fix the problem or broke the bolier even more. I have now given up on it and had to buy a new bolier as the last one was totally knackered helped along a LOT by inexperiance Scottish Gas engineers. One of them also badly damaged my laminate foor, promised to report it to get compensation - Nothing! Every screw that held the bolier together had been lost, the base cover broken off - I could go on. Experianced gas engineers my ar*e!

We're considering getting central heating installed - could anyone reccommend a local plumber? We do have British Gas coming round to give us a quote, but I'd kind of prefer to get a local tradesperson to do it which would hopefully work out cheaper than British Gas too. Any ideas? Thanks.

I think if everybody got serviced only once a year, many relationships would fall apart!!!!!

All quotes we got from British Gas were very pricey. Unfortunately the Broxburn firm we used is now defunct, but we got really good service from Contract Heating in Leith when our combi boiler started to play up. They had to come out several times to try and eliminate what was causing the problem and although I moaned about it at the time they were very thorough and only charged me for one visit. They also do affordable annual cover. I recommend you get them to give you a quote.

Can anyone recommend an Independent Gas Central Heating Company which will install a boiler and radiators etc. based in Edinburgh?

Thanks, its for a work colleague, he's had a huge quote from Scottish Gas

Hello,
Could anyone recommend a heating engineer, please?
My boiler is becoming increasingly temperamental and I would like to have it fixed before it stages a complete walk-out. I'm having problems finding anyone to come and look at it.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
