High Street Joppa?
High Street Joppa?
I've been doing some family research recently and was pleased to discover an ancestor born in Portobello, where I now live. However, I'm a bit confused. Her birth certificate seems to say the family lived at High Street, Joppa in 1868. Was there ever a High Street in Joppa separate to Portobello High Street? Any help or pointing in the right direction to find out would be greatly appreciated.
Re: High Street Joppa?
Yes - there was definitely a "High Street, Joppa". I had a quick check of the old property records at Registers of Scotland and there was that very address!
It doesn't seem to have been used since the 1950s though, as far as I can tell.

Brilliant thanks! Is that something I can look at online? Or do you have any idea what bit was the High Street?
Re: High Street Joppa?
There is a fee payable for looking at the records - you could come to RoS in person and see what more info we have - we have offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Or you could write in with your request. We might have records of the specific property your ancestor was born in, so the more info you have, the better. Then again, if your ancestor just rented the property, there might not be any property deeds in their name.
For more info, go to www.ros.gov.uk.
Another plalce to try would be online maps from that period.
Hope this is helpful

I lived in Joppa from 1947 and cannot remember the main road ever being called anything except Joppa Road where I lived - and cannot think of waht other area would be called the High Street.
