Need to wait for a lunar eplipse, Soupy!!

Spring Equinox should do it. The sun and moon will be aligned to give low tides. Think the last low tides were around the Autumn equinox I've been informed that there was a lunar eclipse but that had nothing to do with the tides _source big ,hairy, amatuer astronomer out there shaking fist at clouds as its too overcast to see the Orionic meteor shower tonight.

Failing that we could send one of the Clangers out. "Great new game kids, see how long you can hold your breath! "

They'rrre baaack!

Tide had turned before I could don wellies and paddle out to take pictures or explore futher.

Certainly looks like a pipe coming out from opposite Baths.

I think its either been salt water intake or possibly an old sewage pipe from before we were linked up to the pumping station.
Anyone any other ideas?

See the golden balls are beached at present, fun for the dogs!

And there's a wee man surveying the beach.

Mr Soupy has pointed out that it was spring equinox today.
He did predict we'd have low tides around now.
He was right

The lowest tide is forecast to be tonight, at 22:24... 20cm lower than this morning, no less!

Tomorrow morning at half ten should be nice and low too...

I missed the excitement of the morning low tide, but did get the alarmingly high tide in the afternoon. Lots of seaweed and a small tree :D

Actually, yeah... Cycled over a heap of seaweed this morning on the Prom. The section of the Prom next the the fun park must have been covered by water through the night.

Sand bags anyone?

I won't be wandering about in the cold and dark at that time of night and I'll have been at work for a couple of hours by 9.50 or whenever tomorrow

I'm relying on that chatterbox SoupD in Mr SoupD's waders to do the biz!!!

Ah, would have been useful to look at that photo first! Will have a pick through the rest of the photos to see if they saw something... Of course I never took a torch (or a second can) so probably wouldn't have seen it anyway!

Rats! I missed the tide.
I didn't get back into Porty until after 11 and the tide has turned
Supposed to be helping MIL tomorrow so will probably miss it then. Wonder what it'll be like on Saturday.

Beautiful photos Wangi!

Tempted as I was by the lure of a dramatically low tide and mysteriously revealed seabed objects, it was dark, I'd have sunk and I have no zoom lens atm.

Been pouring over your pics, superb as ever by the way, the one you've called old supports, the objects are at the sea end of them.
Looks like they're in direct line with the Baths right enough

poor Mr Soupy has been unwell and thought it was the fever making him see wee pirates everywhere!

Speaking to my dad he reckons the low tide objects are indeed the old sea water intake for the Baths
The settling tower was up the wee lane at the side, then the water pumped over the road to the boiler.
Not quite sure when the Baths stopped being salt water, maybe someone alse remembers.

From around 1959
The low tide mystery objects are revealed!
It is indeed the salt water intake for the Baths

The sand level was much lower then as can be seen by this photo taken at the foot of what is now Bellfield St ( then Melville St )

yup
The year must be 1960
I'm walking!

Granpaw was the Pond Manager and lived "above " the Baths in Melville St.
There was a door in the stair led into the Baths
I mind being in the water tower and seeing the" settling tank".
There was a wee fish lived in it and an anenome
The building nest to the water tower , now derelict was the laundry, the towels that were hired out were washed in there
It had HUGE sinks, well they seemed huge to me and a perpetual smell of carbolic soap
I'm sure Granpaw called the boiler Bertha

Tides of March

Post by wangi » 12 Mar 2011, 09:06

From our intrepid tidal reporter; http://velocity-m.blogspot.com/2011/03/ ... march.html
Tides of March
This blog always ends up on the beach. Which is more that its writer does.

This month features a full moon at its largest size in two decades, rising on Saturday 19th. This is followed by an unusually low tide at 21:15 on Sunday 20th and a very high tide on Monday 21st at 15:35.

I didn't risk it in the dark after all, Wangi, but I was straight out there today for the sunshine-soaked high tide!
