Portobello Artwalk:Dreaming Sea

Portobello Open Door are running a project called "Portobello Artwalk: Dreaming Sea". What we are trying to do is to get as many people in Portobello to create a postcard based on the theme 'Dreaming Sea' before Saturday Oct 11th. When we have all the cards we will be exhibiting these between Oct 18th and Nov 1st throughtout Portobello. The bulk of the postcards will be displayed at some of the larger venues in Portobello (Swim Centre, Bowling Centre, Library etc) but our goal is to have as many shops and businesses in the High Street displaying a mounted postcard in their window for the 2 weeks. Hopefully people will enjoy seeing some Art created by local people as they walk along the High Street.

We would like to encourage as many people as possible to take part. You don't have to be a artist, your postcard could be some writing inspired by the theme. To participate simply pick up a blank card at the Library or Community Centre and take it home, then when you are finished take it back and place it in the returns box and we'll pick it up.

We already have the children in Towerbank and St Johns Primary schools creating postcards for us but it's not just a project for children we want people of all ages to be involved. We had a stall at "The Village Show" and at Towerbank's Open day last Saturday so we already have a good number of cards but we are looking for more.

Remember the deadline is October 11th, we hope you have some fun creating your postcard!

Probably a bit late, but it would have been nice to have had the opportunity to create an online postcard as well.

I dare say that Bob Jefferson is a busy bloke but I wonder if he will be able to put a selection of the postcards into one of his galleries on the Portobello Online website?

There may be people like me who work crazy hours and wont be able to get to the library, swin centre etc to see the full selection.

Just a thought.

Actually, since I mention the library I keep meaning to find out where it actually is.. .. ..

I would be happy to put up a PODcard gallery if that's what they want, although they may prefer to do something on their own website.

Bob, thanks for the offer of posting up a gallery of some of the postcards.

We've been asking local shops and businesses about displaying a mounted postacrd in their windows for the 2 weeks of teh Artwalk and most have been very supportive. So we will be picking out a number from the 1000+ cards we expect.

When we've chosen these maybe we could scan a selection of these and pass them onto you. Does this sound ok?

Portobello Artwalk:Dreaming Sea is now on display. The venues are;

Portobello Swim Centre
Portobello Library
Portobello Bowling Centre
Portobello Community Centre
Orcadia (Trampoline Centre)
Portobello Police Station
Bingo Hall
Scotmid

And many of the local shops and businesses are displaying a postcard or two in their windows.

The exhibition will run from Oct 18 - Nov 1.

This is an interesting and creative community idea. Given a wee bit more notice, I'm sure there are loads of groups that might have entered into it - but the time scale was simply too short for me. I do applaude the idea and saw some of the entries on my saunter down the High Street on Friday - including the one in Porty's shop, which is by my bus-stop. Brave to all involved. Let's celebrate our environment and involve all in the commmunity.

Michael - this may not be your intention, but your remarks on this topic come across as rather sarcastic and critical. I can't think why you would be against such an endeavour, so maybe I am just reading too much into your posts. But let's all support such things which can only add to the communituy.

2) I have never ever on this forum said I was against the idea of this postcard thing and not offline either. If you find this correct you are welcome to post a supporting statement!

Thanks for your comments. I hope the cards are brightening up Porty a little. We received around 900 cards, I have to confess we didn't count them one by one. The main contributors were Towerbank and St Johns Primary schools but we also got a good number from The Village Show and the Community Arts Open day at Towerbank. We found that on the whole adults, not used to being creative, were reluctant to give it a go. I suppose as a lot of people grow older lose confidence in their creativity. Speaking from personal experience here!

I agree we could have spread the word out better and earlier and there are certainly some things we would do differently if we were to do something similar again. All suggestions welcome! A lot of POD energy went into the Village Show and there were only 4 of us in the core team to organise the Artwalk though we had a lot of help from the wider POD team to help with the display.

Please make a point of visiting the Library window to see the 3D postcard and the display in the Swim Centre cafe is really nice, as the space is so lovely and bright.

The postcards in Kitcheners are by a lady called Evi Carmichael who runs the St James Art Group. They have an exhibition in the Library as well for the next 10 days or so.

Some people have suggested having a Silent Auction of the best ones after the Artwalk exhibition has ended. Do you think this is a good idea?

I love the Library window and the inventive use of Barbie dolls as mermaids. The kids' postcards are great - lots of splashes of colour and plenty of imagination. Some really nice collages as well.

Hi Bob, thanks for the card, nice one! Are you as creative with pencils and paint or are you, like me, happier at a keyboard?

We've been collecting the cards from the various venues, are you still happy to scan a selection in and create a Gallery in Porty Online? If so how many cards would you want? Probably good if you limited us to a number as we have hundreds.
