Round and round the roundabout

Post by SoupDragon » 02 Jul 2008, 16:04

admin: this thread has been split off from the Replacement of HLR / Seafield / Portobello Rd Roundabout thread.

I have some doubts about the traffic management skills around here.
In my street we have poles erected with no notices on them and a 20mph sign in whats already a 20mph zone.
Conversely the other side of the sign says 30mph.
So coming down say Bellfield Street then along Straiton Place going east its a 20mph zone
But coming down Bath St its 20 mph then 30mph in Straiton Place.

So we have 20mph going east and 30 mph going west in Straiton Place
Then technically going up Regent , Marlborough St or Bellfield St is also 30mph if you've passed the sign but 20 mph if you've not
Does that make sense to anyone?

Yes it does. You have to have the cars going a different speeds in different directions on narrow streets. otherwise they would meet in the middle and not be able to pass.

It like my mate charlie who once knocked a dog down on the queensferry road. The dog was on a leash and charlie, who was still in shock said that if he had been a second later he would have hit the woman. I explained to him that if only he had gone a bit faster he would have missed them both. Understand now?

Thank you Porty.
Its all clear now.

Obviously the railings downstairs were going at the wrong speed when the car hit them :D

If they'd only been going a bit faster the car would have missed them.

That's my point entirely. If it had been going faster it may still have crashed but before it got to the railings.

Or after it had passed them even thereby hitting the woman with the twins in the pram and killing them all instantly?

Yeah but what if in the real scenario she had decided to park the twins in the pram whilst she demonstrated railing climbing to them for when they were a bit older?- The railings and most of the family would be totalled.

So what's your solution then?

Form an action group.

Or issue the railings with Asbos?
Obviously travelling at the speed of the Earth's rotation is not good enough

Surely she would have parked the twins further along from the railings because a double buggy takes up quite a bit of space and the pavement is pretty narrow next to the railings. My guess is, she would have been squished against the railings but the twins would be okay further along near the grass. Unless of course, the car was coming the other way, in which case the twins would be mince and the mother would throw herself on the railing kamakaze style because she couldn't live without them. Nothing to do with speed whatsoever.

I'd still want an inquiry as to why she switched the twins from a pram, where they were presumably lying toes to toes to a much wider double buggy, just as they were approaching a narrowing pavement.

This type of behaviour is a mystery to my gender. I suppose you'll know the answer. Do I really want to get into an argument about child care with someone whose hips could tell more than a thousand stories?

I wonder what would happen is they switched the speed signs around so that the 20mph became the 30mph and vice versa, what would the impact be on the surrounding railings?

I should add, just to stay on topic, that the kings road roundabout doesn't seem to be causing that much of a hold up yet. The temporary lights further up portobello road, just past yer hoose, are causing more bother. Part of the same plan?

I could say that I've been trying to get her to take it lying down for more than 30 Years but that would be so rude.

I quite agree! Had she left them in the pram, the stack of messages she would have had in the tray underneath might have deflected the force of the car as it hit, thereby avoiding serious injury to the twins, and only decemating the half dozen eggs and two packets of Pampers she had in the bag. I don't know what she was thinking

The 100th most likely eulogy on your tombstone. 99th most likely is "Would often change her mind after listening to a counter-argument"

Yes- at least they wrote a song called Roundabout- an outstanding piece of music with Rick Wakeman to the fore.
