Does Googling spoil a good night out?
Does Googling spoil a good night out?
Last night I was at a Western theme do' and it was brilliant. Naturally talk turned to western movies, tv shows etc and what people could remember about them? One cowboy had the internet on his shooter and kept looking stuff up. Much to the annoyance of those of us trying to piece it all together from memory.
The show that people could remember least about was The Virginian, I can picture a chisel jawed fair haired cowboy who was in the opening introduction and a fat bloke whose name may have been hoss. I think it was on at 8:10 on a Friday night on BBC (there was only 1).
I'm determined not to google it but at the same time i'd like to know more?

Oooooo...."The Virginian' ! I loved Trampas
and don't need to Google. I think he must have been my very first crush.
James Drury, I think, played the title role and it was def on Friday night and BBC1. I can state which channel with confidence, because we couldn't get a reception for any other channel.
All done without Googling.

Trampas!! Ya beauty. Did you google that girl? Doug mcLure he reminded me of that actor that played the lead in the Onedin Line.
I'm almost certain Hoss was in Bonanza but the feeling was that The Virginian was either a pre or a sequel and Hoss was in both. The Virginian moved to arizona or somewhere where farming methods were radically different and there was an eternal feud between the bonanza brothers and sisters and whoever else was on the Virginian's side? The Virginian always remained really calm and thougtful. It must have been a prequel cos' I think hoss switched allegiance.
(gordon Hunter who lives in Porty was nicknamed Hoss at School, he was broughton, Roddy Macleod took the title at Porty High)

Ah, that explains why there are some folk on another forum getting very excited about James Drury visiting Ireland in July 2008.
Let's face it, anything involving good looking men, wearing leather chaps, who all sleep together in a bunk house, is bound to be a homo erotic cult.
For those who want even more nostalgia here's a link to the intro to the show
That's fair set me up for the day Porty
No! I meant bonanza is a homo erotic cult! Dont know about the virginian but I guess it makes sense. No of fence intended to Gordon hunter BTW. I think he went to St auggies but played rugby for Broughton.

Nope, didn't need to google Trampas.
Along with Peter Tork from the Monkees he was my first heart throb
There was always trouble in the bunk house and other problems that the Virginian had to sort out
Does anyone know the Viginians name?
I'd forgotten about the High Chapparal
Manolito and company
My favourite in teen ( ish ) years was Alias Smith and Jones
I was really upset when Pete Duel died

Yeah that was sad about pete duel, he was young and damned good looking. if my memory serves me correctly he died at dawn. Peter Tork was brillliant in Cabaret, I couldn't believe the difference from the zany character he played in the monkees and I'm a believer.
I never followed Bonanza, mainly because the tele could barely receive stv, totally unreliable. HC brings back fond memories too as does Casey (KC?) Jones. The Virginian was the out and out star tho.
I could acquire a taste for these Western theme nights.

My favourite Western has to be Blazing Saddles
See the guy that played Hedley Lamar died during the week.
I remember the days of the fuzzy reception on STV. think it was in the days before the Burntisland transmitter. There used to be a vague shadow.
My gran always said it was something to do with Arthur's seat getting in the way
Cabaret? Peter Tork?
You're jesting Porty aren't you?

I watched all the westerns many moons ago!!!
The Lone Ranger and his trusty sidekick Tonto, Wagon Train ( roll em up, move em out!) Rawhide with Rowdy Yates ( Clint Eastwood), etc. etc. I could go on and on!!!!
My favourite was Cheyenne played by Clint Walker.
I even wrote to him and got a postcard back! Made my day!!!
Here's a good site for all those memories

Sounds good to me. I can't go
.I'm housesitting this weekend till next weekend, which includes looking after two dogs, one cat, two horsed, two ponies and several chickens and ducks (not to mention the garden). I'm looking forward to it.
I've got tickets for T in the Park for next Saturday though
(just a stroll from my house). They were a gift from the friend I'm housesitting for.

Wounded? Sounds sore
Serious enough to keep you in front of the tele anyway. Hope you're better now.
The new Dr Who has sort of grown on me, but I didn't find the Sat night episode very scary. However, I thought Bernard Cribbens did well - very believable and brought a tear to my eye. (He sort of crops up on your screen just when you think he must have died years ago.)
The wedding is in a few weeks. I've ditched the black dress in favour of the blue one and have now moved on to a new fashion dilemma ; is matching bag to shoes old fashioned?
