Dentist sign to bite the dust

The owners of a dental surgery in Portobello that installed railings and a sign outside their premises without planning permission are set to be told to take them down.

Councillors are expected to turn down a bid by the Ross dental practice, on Brighton Place, to gain permission for the additions and recommend enforcement action to ensure they are removed.

Planning officials said the building is category B-listed and the railings and sign are "out of keeping" with the area. The fittings are expected to be thrown out at a meeting of the city's planning committee next week.

It may sound trivial but I imagine it will have cost a four figure sum to install the railings and they will now have to pay to have them removed. There have been many other instances of this sort of thing in Portobello, which have ended up costing the owners thousands of pounds. I seem to remember that there was someone in Straiton Place who harled the stonework of his house and then had to pay to have it all chipped off again.

Moral of the story is - ask first!

I'll be surprised if he has to remove the railings. Didn't think anyone had any argument with them. They are certainly in keeping with the area (which incidentally is 'A' listed as a whole). The sign was completely over the top, however, and unnecessary.

Additionally, the completely paved-over front gardenis a complete mish mash of different paving bricks and looks hideous. He did this without permission too and I fully expect that to go. Not only did the owner show disregard for his neighbours, he showed complete disregard for planning procedure too. Have no sympathy for him.

I don't think any of it looks that bad. It just needs a bit of planting to mature and soften it all. Certainly better than parking cars at the front of it or leaving it to become overgrown. I think the Council should be forcing the rest of the houses in the street whose walls and railings are a mess to get them sorted out - it's the same old story with the Council and listed buildings. Owners of listed buildings are seemingly allowed to let them rot but as soon as somebody tries to do something to improve them they're penalised. Been there, done that!

My point is nothing has been decided yet. The article says there's going to be a council planning meeting. Big deal. It's news if it happens.

True. This is the same EN who said the funfair application was all set to be approved again prior to the council meeting and guess what? It was rejected.

Update from today's EN:

Dentist rapped over railings

A DENTAL surgery in Portobello is to be told to remove an illegal sign and railings from outside its premises or face having them taken down by council staff.

Members of the city's planning committee have agreed to take enforcement action against the Ross dental practice, on Brighton Place.

The owners of the surgery had applied for retrospective permission for the additions, but planning officials recommended the scheme was turned down.

My understanding is that PAS, on behalf of the Community Council, objected to the sign and to the 'landscaping'. There was no objection to the railings, which appear to be of the same design as the original railings at the property next door.

But Epykat, we need to have someone with taste to keep us in order, otherwise B&Q would do even more of a roaring trade in fake standing stones and job lots of 'decorative' brick as we all 'landscaped' our gardens

Beat it Jefferson! My gazebo almost made a reappearance the other week in my neighbour's garden but we decided it was too wet. It's in the garage in anticipation of a good Summer
