Utopia Beach pub - Bath Street

Post by GRANTY » 12 May 2006, 19:34

I just noticed today that all the steel panels have been taken off the windows and it's got a new name? I'm certain the panels were in place yesterday for Rebus. Anyone know what's going on?

"THE PLACE
BY THE SEA"

Or something like that... See, it was possible to have a worse name!

Complete lack of imagination. They should have made it a seafood bistro and called it "The Plaice by the Sea' surely?

Went past this morning walking the dog, and the steel boards were still up..but it was 'The Place....blah, blah' - I assumed that was just the name that had been put up for Rebus.........or should I say, "hoped" that was just the name they'd put up for Rebus.

I saw some people putting the sign up the night before the Rebus filming was due to take place. I assumed they were part of the film crew and also thought the name sign must be for Rebus. But maybe they were the new proprieters? Who knows, hopefully we'll find out soon.

The pub name was covered up for Rebus as not meant to be a pub, but a boarded up house  So it was co-incidence that the name was changed when it was. Just as well the filming was arranged for before the re-opening!!

Marya, we walked Bess along that way to check it out, not very inviting, bouncers on the door :o who sort of looked us up and down, and that was before we tried to gain entry! and younger than us clientele so we decided just to have a drink at home. Will probably try it for lunch one weekend though, and good to have somewhere along that end for beach drinks :D (if the summer ever comes)

We went along last Friday night to check it out and were met at the door by the bouncers who refused us entry because "It's ticket only - for locals". Not sure what they classed as local  . We retired to the Ormelie and had a lovely evening with fantastic company........okay, I lie, it was Ali and Jackson
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

and a year later....
its looks as though utopia is closing :D
me and my friend got barred from there, because apparently we were "underage" (she forgot her ID - they did not ask us for ID until we had already consumed 5 vodkas each)
Funny thing is, we are 20 & 21, there was a table of chavs on the other side of the pub my friend recognised from her old school - 2to3 years younger than u :S

Its been through 2 owners since it changed from old pier. It would be good to have a really trendy wine bar/restaurant there.

Yeah one that doesn't attract NEDS, and also won't serve huge tables of (really) underage people, then kick out two people who LOOK underage but actually aren't  especially when the big table were causing more noise than me and my friend sitting quietly in the corner discussing free radicals.
::angry::

Thinking about it'd be nice to have the "Old Pier" back... You know, just a normal pub... Not too trendy, not too old-manish, not too nedish... Just normal.

Not to nedish, really, is there a need, I see myself as a bit of a ned certainly not a snob, and would be willing to sit in any public house anywhere, surmising that people are this or that is what causes trouble in the first place.
As for giving other "names" before even getting to know them.
Were they perhaps a bit loud?
don't we all get a bit loud when we have had a couple, or is that just my nedish behaviour coming out !!

Really?

Ned is a derogatory term applied to certain young people in Scotland (similar to the terms chav used in England, skanger in Ireland, and spide in Northern Ireland). The stereotypical view of a ned is an adolescent male youth, of working class background, who wears fake Burberry, who engages in hooliganism, petty criminality, loutish behaviour, underage drinking and smoking or just irritating others[1]. They are often assumed to be unemployed. The Collins English Dictionary defines ned as "a derogatory term for a young working-class person who dresses in casual sports clothes"[2], although this omits the hooligan element.
