This is not the only forum serving this new ward 17

Post by Mrs Mangle » 27 Mar 2007, 12:53

I beg to differ on a few things, talkporty is not the only forum serving this area, the way it is read to my eyes is that this will be the board that will talk for the new Ward 17 come the elections on May 3rd.
Not so, I read and post on Realcraigmillar.com and can assure any users here that it has a large memmership across the Greater Craigmillar area and beyond, also like here there are various threads, but folk mainly use general chat to say what they have to.
Of course it may be that Real C is not to the taste of all users here as it is not for the faint hearted, which I think the majority of talkporty users are.
Finally this thing that is being conducted with the prospective councillors for Craigmillar/Portobello is unfair for the above reasons, i.e it doesn't reach far enough into the new ward.

Hey Mrs M.

Did RealC kick out "The Basa" - or was there some sort of split from another Craigmillar site?

Thanks J - I know where I've got confused. There's a Craigmillar forum that kicked off Basa (he runs EdSucks) and RealC is the one he set up.

Can't remember the name of the original one - oh yes - Craigmillar Online.

Don't even know if it's still going, I just remember reading one when the split happened.

talkporty doesn't say anywhere that it is the only forum serving the area.

A distinction is that talkporty is but just one way that Bob Jefferson of Portobello Online (i.e. not talkporty) is advertising this initiative, but not the only one. There's nothing stopping you spreading the word on other forums.

No, and TP doesn't claim to serve the ward. It is TalkPorty, a privately-owned and independently-run website forum primarily for the community of Portobello, although we're not too insular about it and have members from all over the place.

As one of the administrators, I would like to make it clear that this board doesn't talk for anyone in particular; people express their personal views and as with most websites, the view contained herein do not necessarily represent the views of the adminstrators, techie folk, or moderators, but of the posters themselves only.

I can hear you don't like the implication you felt there was that this forum was somehow representing the ward, although hopefully Wangi's post has cleared that up for you now. I freely admit I can get very touchy when I feel people are implying they "represent" my views when they don't, as many people round here will confirm! However, I wonder if TalkPorty members might feel something very similar in response to you saying the majority of them are faint-hearted?

My guess is that if the RealC website is to our members' tastes, and has relevance to them, then they will use it. If not, they will not...just as some RealC users use this forum and some do not. I just wonder if you would be pleased if TP members suddenly posted on the RealC forum criticising the majority of its users. I'm sure there's room for more than one forum and for more than one opinion.

I hope this makes TalkPorty's position clearer for you.

I would love to argue this point but I am too frightened. 8)

Well you all make my sides split NOT.
As for the Basa starting up real c because another site closed NOT, it was felt that one site namely CRAIGNET did not express the views of the community at large, so certain people (not me, before anyone asks) asled if he could set up another site for the people, just as soon as that was done CRAIGNET started banning users left right and centre, hope that clears that up.
I said some of the users to ME seemed fainted hearted, freedom of speech and all that, and I also live in the Portobello area and decide to join Real C, I felt a forum were you could you proper freedom of speech was better than what I had been reading here at that time.
Can I suggest that the questions that are soon to be e mailed out to the prospective canidates also could be posted on real c and replies as and when they come in.
Or is that to much to ask considering BJ doesn't like the Basa, and has banned him from posting here, for what I have never been told.

Crystal. There's trouble on here when people claim they represent the community too!

I've always thought we should have a "sandpit" area on here, 18+ obviously, which was unmoderated.

Iain Paisley and Gerry Adams sat at the same table the other day. Now that we're all in the same council ward I'm sure we can work together for our grandchildren without having to forget the horrors of the past.

I may as well add my tuppence worth too Mrs M , though most of it has already been said.

There will be two lots of hustings held locally for the new ward. One will be in Portobello (think it's the Town Hall on the 18 April from about 6.30 p.m. -10 p.m.) and another one in Craigmillar later in the month.

talkporty.org is independent of the CC and the extra 'virtual hustings' on here is being organised in a personal capacity by Bob Jefferson. We are happy to put the questions and answers up on the site to add a bit of publicity for - and get folk more interested in - the elections.

If you want to put the questions and answers up on another site there's nothing to stop you quoting them, but better still why don't you organise something similar on another forum if you think you might want to ask different questions?

Probably best to email Bob and talk it over. I'm sure he'd welcome someone else posting to that site on his behalf, but I think it's safe to say he wont do it himself. Bob's doing this off his own back and in his own free time - he's not got an obligation to post anywhere. So you best offer your services if you want to widen the scope!

Whatever Basa did to get kicked of POL it must have been bad. As far as I know there have only been 4 "people" banned from POL and noone has yet managed it here on TP.

Mrs M is right about one thing, the candidates questions will hopefully not be entirely focused on Portobello.
