(Radio Free Porty) RFP RIP?

Post by Bob Jefferson » 12 Mar 2007, 22:23

So what has happened to Radio Free Porty? It doesn't seem to have been broadcasting for months and the 'latest news' wishes us a happy new year. What's the story?

It's out to lunch.

Gilo quit and the remaining 2 staff had babies.

I've not re-applied for our license this year - meaning that if we wanted to broadcast copyrighted work someone would have to re-apply for it.

If anyone wants to run it, give me a shout.

Are you leaving the RFP forum up Dadaist ? Notice there's more dodgy porn links on there again, so Bob, you might want to reconsider your link from the POL site ?

Yeah - sorry peeps...

Totally don't have the time - Mrs IV and I have our hands full with Anna and our new business is about to kick off on the 31st too!

[Mmmmmm...!]

(If anyone wants to take on the RFP mantle, I'll hand over all the code etc)

Thanks - I've deleted them.

Good point. There's some right busy-bodies about, and you can never be too careful. Not to mention the press.

I think I'll leave the forum up just now.

The link is up to Bob. It doesn't point to the forum though - it's a link to the main page. But yeah, the Evening News have knifed someone over something similar so I take your point.

It wasn't the busybodies or press who concerned me Dadaist , that's your own look out, so much as the nature of the links.

The forum link just takes me to a log in page. Is that where the dodgy links were?

I think it would be helpful if someone could update the home page to explain the current situation. Not everyone who follows the link from Portobello Online uses the forum and may therefore be unaware that RFP is looking for a new owner.

I really hope someone takes this on. How about ali and Tom Nimmo? There's an interesting combo. Gilo? Nelson?

To try and combat the porn bots I turned off "guest" posts on the forum, (but you get some which register and then post the links) - that's why you get a login screen - you need to login.

I'll try and get round to changing the front page.

It would be nice if someone took it on, you're quite right.

Dunno about the software, but there's an RFP PC which comes with the job.

Before Gilo ran away he was concentrating on collecting and encoding the music - IV was doing the website and I was handling the MCPS/PRS and hosting.

So you'd have to do all 3 unless you could find some subordinates.

Could probably do it all apart from the having the rfp pc on all the time connected up to the interweb, which i suppose is a fairly crucial part of it. Unless I can do that from work, which is a possibility, but it would mean it'd have to be done from a mac. Unless someone else could volunteer for that bit. I'm sure Ali would do it, but he spends a lot of time worrying about carbon footprint these days. Ali?

edit: typographic error

Nelson,

if you or Ali wants to have a look at what is involved in keeping the website up to date etc then you can download a copy of the whole site code [here]

I currently have the RFP pc too, so if you fancy it just drop me a pm. (Edit - the pc belongs to Dada, so please clear this with him first)

Any questions about the code, just post in this thread.

Before taking the huff, my first question was to check out RFP's green credentials and the 24/7 computer. My fears were allayed when I was told a computer only uses a bit of electricity.

It's complicated and as you know I'm not the most technically gifted, I'm more your ideas man. Everything runs at a snails pace or worse and it could be the hatdwear or it could be the filing system or summit. Anyway plans are afoot to get the professionals in.

I've got a nice quartz crystal on ours and it's getting better.
Mr Soupys slaving over hot codes may have done something as well

Anyone have an update? The site seems to be down altogether now. Is this a dead project or are there still plans to revive it?

There's a very important meeting on friday night, at which the future of RFP will be one of the topics under discussion.

Is there any possibility of reviving/restarting a Porty based Internet station? East Coast FM based in Haddington seems to be doing well with plenty support from the community (http://www.eastcoastfm.co.uk). It's even had funding from their local council!

Maybe the first try was too early; there are now more people with Internet Radios and the like (and it's growing) so it is getting easier for folk to listen in. If there's any chance of a relaunch, I'd be interested in getting involved.

Just spotted this post. Funnily enough, I had been thinking about this recently as well. Let's give it some thought and re-convene soon.

We do them in plastic or real flesh. Obviously real flesh is considerably more expensive.

Interesting. Do we know for sure that they are in Bath Street, Portobello?

I found this. Emily doesn't remember it at all. She was just 4 at the time.
