Actually, just trying... assblower... isn't a verbotten word. If it's good enough for Portobello High Street then it must be good enough for us online!

Oh, I know... Otherwise the world will stop turning and innocent eyes would be forever corrupt! It's an assault on the English language I tell you.

I tried the Star take away last night for the first time after being dragged in there by a mate.

Had a quarter pounder, chips and 5 pakoras. Pakoras were excelent.

Can recommend it.

Thought it was time to resurrect this thread.

On a horrible night like this, the idea of a takeaway is really appealing to me. I usually go to the 108 which is great, but fancy a change of Chinese. Any recommendations? or does anyone know what the thai place is like?

Cheers :D

I was going to recommend Sesame (dim sum and pak choi for a change) but am having trouble with its website www.sesame.me.uk as McAfee keeps telling me it's a dodgy adult site

Well, I had a day off today... And I watched a guy from the Gourmet Feast pick shellfish off the last groyne on the beach. Hopefully that was for his own enjoyment, given the bloody big sign in front of my (and their) window saying it's very much not recommended. YMMV.

Nice thread - definitely needing an update though!

We're new to the area and so far our favs are:
A sandwich = Kitcheners
A chinese = Dragon Way - one of the best chinese's we've ever had in edinburgh
A curry = Bonoful
A thai = Thai2Go
A chippy = Carlo's - we love real onion rings!
A pint = Dalriada (not a take away, but a good pint of the black stuff is as good as a meal)

We're pleastantly surprised with what we've got on our doorstep here on lovely Bath Street. :D

Agree sandwich, Chinese - had some not so good meals there, Curry - Cinnamon (hands down, though Bonoful is great for a sit-in if you avoid the poppadums), Thai - agree, Domthong good too), Carlo's - bit hit and miss :( , Pint - Dal - good choice though we could do with some trendier bars on the high street. :D

Glad you are enjoying living in Portobello :D

Laziness and greed pretty much sums it up. That and having no food in the house and not being able to face a treck to Asda

pasta or chinese/pasta or chinese? hmmmmmmmm...... not much of a decision really!

Just gave cinnamon a try as a result of this thread. The customer service wasn't 100% but the food was very nice - not amazing though.

People need to realise that customer service is almost as important as the actual food in this game!

aileenandfearghal thats the exact reason why we stopped going to our local chinese; the dragon way. We always found that their customer service was pretty non-existent. Which is why we switched to the 108, where they are very cheery (and the food is great!) :D

We'd always been Carlo-ists since moving to Portobello, but the hit-and-miss nature of the offerings were becoming a bit...actually, a lot....more hit than miss, so we decided on a change.

3 fish suppers later, 2 of which were excellent, and we're now St Andrew-ers. One was not so good, but the "hit" percentage was a lot higher than we'd been experiencing lately in Carlo's!

Fridays must be a bad day for having nothing left in the fridge as I seem to be facing the same dilemma again! Anyone know what the thai place on the high street is like? :D
