Is there anywhere in Porty that sells readymade sushi or all the ingredients to make it with?

As did the bloke who reached out to pick up what he thought was a pretty seashell in the long grass, only to have it leap up and snap shut.

He uttered some loud theological expletives as he leapt back, nursed his nipped fingers and calmed his nerves..

I think the only thing you'll be able to get here is the avocado and crab sticks/salmon, plus vinegar. I don't know what the co-op have but you might get the wasabi and the correct soy - at a push though.

Do you want me to go to one of the chinese supermarkets on Leith Walk for you?

They are the only places I've seen sushi rice - although (guessing here) can you use pudding rice instead?

As for the rolling mat - I improvised with a reed placemat.

Rapunzell, Waitrose sells the stuff to make sushi - seaweed sheets etc.

Unfortunately no Waitrose in Portobello

but one in Morningside and other in Comely Bank. We went to the Morningside one weekend we hired a car - great shop but hideously expensive.

I used to love going to Yo Sushi and picking stuff to eat off the conveyor belt.

Yo Below was great too - just had to keep count of these beers you were pouring. Also guy who did great back massage and girl who read tarot cards. There were also beds you could lounge around on. They also did karoke - used to be a great night out. I was very sorry when it closed.

As much as I love sushi - I hated that place below! Claustrophobic, weird loos, and it was the most uncomfortable meal I've ever had. Taxi!

It is now a Filling Station and the downstairs is totally different, you wouldn't think it was the same place.

I was only there once. I think if it had been when I wasn't so starving, or if I had access to a beer tap, I'd have a different view.

I'm yet to experience conveyor sushi - I've only had it served.

Gotta love tempura as well.

Was Yo Sushi the place who sent out deliveries by rickshaw? If so then I am very sorry to hear it has gone because as well as wanting sushi I wanted to be driven around in a rickshaw : ) The c90 pizza delivery scooters just don't have that romance about them..

Also, when you cut through that fiddly seaweed stuff, make sure you use a sharp knife and a firm, decisive cutting motion - otherwise you'll be left with so much messed up sushi that you'll have to eat anyway that the whole experience of rice fanning, vinegar sprinkling, mat rolling, wasabi fiddling leaves you with the firm conviction that you'll never ever make sushi again, and should you ever decide to eat it, you'll get someone else to make it. I WOULD IMAGINE.

Thanks for the info - perfect timing as I was just thinking that I fancied cheating and just buying a big tray of ready made stuff this week : )

Sharp knives! Damn, there is a reason I usually make things that involve nothing more hazardous than a spoon.. Thats it settled then; this week I'm definately going to have to cheat : )

Ok, for research purposes I have discovered that Sushiya and Izzi don't do sushi home delivery, but Chimei (538 7012, from 294 Leith Walk) do!

It is only the most basic and westernised Maki (ie using chicken and cooked tuna) but just wonderful after such a long sushi drought. There were four kinds: chicken and veg maki
tuna and veg maki
shrimp and veg maki
vegetable and egg maki

So nowt for vegans but at least something for vegetarians and those opposed to seafood.

They also deliver chocolate gateau and cheesecake
