Knife crime and the news

Normally I watch the BBC for the news. However, tonight I decided to watch a film and missed the 10pm slot so I watched the ITV news at 10.30pm instead . Unfortunately I was not impressed. What really annoyed me was their item about knife crime. They tried to link Luke Mitchell's alleged use of hash with this particular crime. Are they really that desperate to try and turn this small time crime into something more than what it really is? Is knife crime really as bad as what they seem to make out? When I was young (okay it was quite a number of years ago) I had an interest in knives. It was different then. Noone gave a second thought to it. There didn't seem to be a problem. What has changed?

Scorpion are you saying knife crime is "small time" or are you refering to use of hash?

Of course knife crime is very serious and I certainly don't want to trivialise it. However, why does it need to be blamed on hash? Why bring Luke Mitchell into the picture? If hash was to disappear from the scene would that solve the problem? Surely there are other reasons for the fact that knife crime seems to be so prevalent. Not least the need for some news media to try to make the situation sound worse than what it is.

Most boys at my school carried knives. I did too! Not for attack purposes, but defence cos we had some pretty bad bullies at my school. In my first year, they jumped me and deliberately broke my leg. I heard the 'crack'!
I don't like the fact kids carry knives ... but I understand them completely. Kids are not nice to each other ... especially if they're from another area. It's a highly visceral clan/tribal thing for them ... boys AND girls.

Why's it got so bad? It was always bad ... just not open enough as now!

The problem is that if you are forced to use it in 'defence' then you may become the attacker. On the other hand if you lose the knife to your opponent then you may become the injured party. I can't help wondering if more people are attacked with knives where drink is involved. However, because we can't ban drink perhaps that is why the media are now trying to blame drugs.

Not a lot. When I was growing up in the fifties knives were common. (The big Edinburgh gang then was the Jacobites and they featured regularly in the papers following knife fights).

The following is a contemporary newspaper account of Glasgow in the Thirties:
"It culminated in a showdown in Dale Street. The gangsters came together. Hundreds of them. The street was soon a scene of congestion and pandemonium. The Billy Boys were ferociously attacked. Personally I don't think drugs, whether hash or booze or a nything else. As Cleopas said, it's a visceral clan thing.

I have two uncles who were in the Jacobites in the 50s. Teddy boy type haircuts and crappy shoes (or is that crepe?) were all the rage according to my mother. Her first boyfreind was a Jacobite from Craigmillar. And yes, they all carried knives too.

Well PoP, I think that was quite funny but it would've been even funnier if you'd said 1750's given that the jacobite rebellion was in 1745.

The urge to fight can be territorial, personal, emotional, and a host of all sorts of reasons. Blaming it on hash / grass / whatever drugs is taking the reasons away.

Whatever happened to the good old "square go" or "toe-to-toe".....when I was young (circa 1800) that was my preferred option.

The only thing a hash smoker will attack is the fridge.

The urge to fight is mainly a male thing. It's all that testosterone and territory nonsense so they can bag all the best females

. I don't think knife crime is any worse now than it has ever been it's just that this mad, media frenzy that we're all caught up in, which makes us think that we have to know absolutely EVERYTHING that's going on in the whole wide world, tells us about it, all day every day. It also puts ideas into young heads which might not otherwise have got there.

He was an obnoxious oik who was totally out of order to Dada and even worse, his family. He got booted out of here a while back and tried to reinvent himself then re-register. There are similarities between the style and content of Mcgahie's posts. Hence the question. If its not the artist formerly known as Hiboz then he/she won't be offended.
