Have signed up...
Looks like thanks to Diana Cairns (whoever she is??).
Must say those things drive me nuts. Can't think what it's like for the people who live in Porty and have to hear those things all day.
Only engines I hear is the sound of Subaru's driving at 80 miles an hour past my front door (much quieter

)

"The first issue is the noise - I live around half a mile away from the beach and I can clearly hear the whine of the jet-skis from inside my house"
That's impressive hearing.

It is amazing how the sound travels though. We really don't need to go to anything on the beach because we can hear it clear as a bell in the garden and we're on the High Street. We can hear the jet skis too.

From today's EN Letters Page:
Turn down jet-skis
I AM a resident of Portobello living on the Promenade, and was relieved to see that I am not alone in being driven mad by the noise pollution of the jet skiers (News, June 9). The noise from these machines is like having very noisy motorbikes for hours on end outside your window - I am sure the jet ski owners would complain about such an occurrence at their homes. Some action needs to be taken to limit their use near residences and make the summer more tolerable.

Being a wee bit further back, they don't really sound like motorbikes to me. It's more of a whining noise and a sort of thump as they hit the waves

. Come to think of it, that could just be a domestic next door

We are all a bunch of gurners, according to EN journo Liam Rudden:
The recent summer sun has also tempted jet-skiers on to the waters of the Firth of Forth, and in doing so raised temperatures in more ways than one down at Porty.
This week it was revealed that nearly 200 people have signed a parliamentary motion lodged by Portobello Community Council urging MSPs to restrict the use of jet-skis. Apparently the signatories are unhappy about, among other things, the noise of these aquatic motorbikes, and so are demanding a clampdown on their use along Scotland's coastlines. Have you noticed that minority groups always have the loudest voices and a tendency to over-react?
No wonder the Prom has become a mere shadow of what it once was. The gurners are probably the same people who begrudge cyclists using the promenade and secretly balk at the idea of it ever getting really busy - think of the noise of people enjoying themselves, and then there's the litter . . . the list is endless.
At a time when Portobello prom is fighting to recapture its former glory, surely anyone bringing a bit of life to the coastline should be embraced by community leaders.
As the chairman of the Royal Yachting Association Scotland - a lone voice of reason - pointed out, it should be possible to manage the use of jet-skis in such a way that they can be compatible with other beach users.
In fact, a leaf could be taken out of Musselburgh Racecourse's book as, in time, jet-ski racing could become an organised spectator sport that provides a boost to the local economy.

think of the noise of people enjoying themselves,
The point is that we cannot hear people enjoying themselves above the noise when jetskis are close to the beach.

Idiot.

He's neglected to mention the fact that, setting aside the noise, the main issue is one of safety to other people using the sea

. But I suppose that's their lookout as long as the jet skiers are 'enjoying' themselves?

From today's EN Letters Page:
A view on room
THERE is plenty room for jet skiers and bathers on Portobello beach. You can swim from the bottom of King's Road to Joppa. Portobello is a very long beach. Divide it, one part for jet skies, another for swimmers.

Awwww, are we still all moaning on about this?
Get over it. If you don't like the noise, wait until they come ashore and go talk to them yourself. How many of the moaning contingent have taken that approach? Or do we all just do our moaning on this safe wee forum where no one will shout back at you?
Deal with it and move on.

Bob, I do agree with some of the comment attached to the story - I mean, how are the cops going to police this?
Its always with the complaining though - if it wasn't jetski's it would be cyclists. If we manage to have all the cyclists kicked off then we'll complain about the dog walkers. Once they're gone, then we'll find someone else to target until there is actually no one at all whatsoever allowed on the prom or in the sea - by order.

I think it boils down to the same thing whether you are talking about cycling, jetskis or whatever. All that we are asking is that people act responsibly and with consideration for others. If an exclusion zone is clearly marked out, and it's a tiny section of the coast to be fair, then surely it's not asking much for it to be observed? I don't think that the signatories to this petition are being killjoys. They recognise that there is a real danger to swimmers and wildlife and have been forced to take this action. The jetskiers are also a danger to themselves of course and there have been accidents.

I don't get disturbed by jet ski noise in my garden or home IV, but can imagine that others living close to the Prom would find it intrusive. I believe that some posters on here have spoken to jet skiers only to get a mouthful of abuse. IMHO if jet skiers won't pay heed to the safety buoys then they have brought all this down on themselves. The sea is a fairly large area and all that is being asked is that they chose to blast back and forth ( which let's face it, must get fairly boring after a while) somewhere away from bathers. Or will depriving the jet skiers of an audience spoil their fun I wonder?

I was an early signatory and would love see the things banned. The beach should be able to be enjoyed by everybody, one person and place sounds like a motorcross rally. If you want to listen to an internal combustion engine go anywhere edinburgh. I moved to porty so I could enjoy the beach, one of the few places left with a bit of tranquility in edinburgh. But what do we get; every summer evening someone drives in in their 4x4 and jetskis parallel to the beach to show how "cool" they are. Bet they don't live in porty, so they don't care at the disturbance they cause. And yes, they are clearly audible right at the seafield road end of Kings Road.
Stick a bollard on the ramp at the of Kings Road, chain up the gates properly at the two entrances to the roads. Problem solved. I would even be happy if there was access two or three times a week - its the freeforall that was causing the problem.
That said things have been quieter of late; in contrast to comments on this board ranting does work!

What about truck racing then?. Great fun, exciting spectacle, sure to bring in lots of money. Would you be happy with that?

If it was done properly and marketed well - I bet it would be a great success. Bob would probably commission Kitch into making a featurette about it. I could do the soundtrack.
Catch a grip.

I had almost forgotten about the jet skis until I read this article in the News. The online comments after it make our school thread look a bit tame (thankfully). It always amazes me that there are so many people who believe they have the right to do whatever they want , wherever they want and just don't care about the noise or irritation that their hobby foists on the rest of us. Me, I like a bit of peace and quiet when I am on the prom but I have to admit that the jet skiers and their entourage are an entertaining stereotype to look at. They drive down in their 'small penis' 4x4s with sound systems pumping out the latest dance tunes, pull their wet suits over their tattoos and gold chains, put their offspring on to little motorbikes and let their Staffy terriers dump all over the beach. Really, could they be any more chav if they tried? Ain't it the truth that life's a beach in sunny Portobello.
Prom cycling for all.

I can truthfully say that Jet Skiers have not impacted on me in any way whatsoever. In fact I don't think I have even heard one at Portobello. I have seen and heard speedboats.
I have mixed feelings about calling their activities "noise pollution". If one chooses to live beside a beach, road, railtrack, factory, bus depot etc etc then one has to live with the consequences. It is fair enough to complain about abuse, which I assume the Jet Skiers do. The beach and the river are public amenities after all.

I have kept out off this for years now, But the whole thing is is now getting worse.
I have been a very keen jetskier for 10 years now and i think it`s time some people on this forum think a little harder about what they spout off on their keyboards.
I ski at Loch Lomond but in 2007 i will be using the sea as it is right on my doorstep.
They tried to ban us on Loch Lomond until a survey by Sports Scotland kicked the whole thing into touch, Every little moan, lie & made up story about how bad we all are was laid bare. And quess what we are still there.
So if you would like some input on jetskiing or simply some facts then please ask. And believe me reading some of the stuff that`s written on this thread you are way off the mark with you understanding on some things.
Would be nice to have a debate on this instead of wild ramblings.

I'm well up for that and I assure you I am open-minded about it. What is you assesment about the negative comments on the thred so far, is there any justification? Do skiers take their vehicles onto the beach, do their dogs foul and the owners don't pick it up?
I live on the other side of the high street from the beach so I am some distance away.
