Is Porty the new Jimmy Swaggart?

Post by Dadaist » 25 Mar 2006, 10:57

Seanie provides intellectual analysis, facts and figures. Bob tries to be pro-plan in a nice way but occasionally drops the ball with blanket accusations of nimbyism and a swift about-face over his position on the bowling green next to his house.

But the real bodyguard of the PHS plan is yer man Macintyre. Costner-like, he dances round this Whitney Houston of an idea and either thumps all-comers or glares at them.

His approach has become increasingly Evangelical. I thought it was just me, but Epykat has noticed it too.

Therefore I pose the question - is Porty the new Jimmy Swaggart?

I dunno. I've been going back through the PHS thread from the beginning and am starting to spot the seeds of evangelism - in fact all you have to do is substitute "IN JEEEEZUZ NAME" for each instance of "DOYOUHAVEAVIABLEALTERNATIVE" and his posts are very Swaggartesque indeed!

Porty is certainly evangelical, i.e. zealous, about PFANS, but I fail to see any similarities between that and the conduct of a disgraced, money grubbing, prostitute using, TV preacher. What point are you making Dadaist?

Thanks for stepping in M. Don't think the boy meant any harm.

Hahahaha Dada this is just the sort of humour that sets you apart. I love it. :D :D :D Although its not even approximately accurate but so what?

Thing is, you can mock the style, its all that's left, cos the argument's bulletproof.

I do have an unfortunate habit of glaring in real life and I know it can be off putting, however 9 times out 10, I'm glaring cos my train of thought has gone elsewhere and I forgot to have a facial expression.

This post is a tribute to one aspect of the undisputed argumentative powerhouse that is S.M. Please don't think it's an attack cos it ain't. I am genuinely in awe of the man - he can use every trick in the book, the main one being the ability to deny having even seen or heard of the book!

I must say, I love reading Stephen's questions. To me, they have a strange musical quality - and, like all music (apart from "Bjork Unplugged") they have aspects of repetition.

One such word that my hero is fond of using is "integrity". In fact, he accounts for around 20% of the entire usage of this word in POL history. (Now that's one statement whose integrity I may have to defend!)

I feel slightly to blame though, because back when I was an SSP and we used to use Tommy Sheridan as a ping pong ball, Porty said :
Porty wrote:What grounds does he have to call the conduct of his colleauges into question?
which was closely followed by
Porty wrote:Perhaps I should have said integrity instead of grounds.
and could mark the start of his usage of this word as a weapon.

Since then, though, things have flourished as a quick search showed :
Porty wrote:Is the subject of this debate "Political" integrity?
Porty wrote:I know you are a person of integrity
Porty wrote:Can you talk us through it once again, whilst maintaining the integrity of both statements?
Porty wrote:How, with any integrity at all, can you then make the following statement?
Porty wrote:I do trust his integrity tho.
Porty wrote:People will take their own view on your integrity, I have mine.
Porty wrote:Now that the truth is widely known, saying it doesn't really mattter is a bit of an about turn, indeed it lacks integrity.
Porty wrote:Seems clear that he means ALL POL discussion forums are little more than gossip and tittle-tattle but I am less clear about what parts of the website "has been good at raising issues". How can both statements by Lawrence have integrity?
Porty wrote:Dave, Stephen Hawkins, as part of his presentation on behalf of PPAG, informed the full Edinburgh Council (and this is an approximation) that Portobello Park was the only large piece of open land/green space in western portobello. Do you believe that statement has integrity?
I wonder whether this is a premeditated tactic or just an argumentative "habit" - and I wonder what it means exactly to have either shown outright or (in a legalistic way) said that it is a personally held opinion that either a statement or a person lacks integrity?

As far as I know it ( == watching telly), when someone is cross-examined and makes a mistake or contradicts themselves, this can have repercussions for the whole trial - and could be a deliberate tactic by a lawyer in order to show a pre-existing lack of integrity or (worse) manufacture one by making someone trip themselves up.

The schools thread can sometimes take on a court-like air. Porty - what's on your mind when you use this word?

Are you only questioning the integrity of your opponents?

I know that you will take this post in the I-owe-you-a-pint-for-those-coffee-beans spirit with which it was crafted, sir.

p.s. I don't doubt your you-know-what!

p.p.s Some of those quotes were made as S.M. - please excuse my laziness as this was a cut 'n' paste job

You may indeed, your 20% guesstimate may be accurate, however considering that I am collectively responsible for 11% of the entire posts here on POL I feel you are singling out my word usage to suit your own devious ends. Why are you hounding me?

As far as my most recent use of the I word is concerned? I am not calling into question Stephen Hawkins personal integrity, In fact his and PCATS victory over the planning proposal for the superstore makes him something of a local hero in my book. Stephen made the statement on behalf of PPAG and as I tried to convey I'm not 100% sure of exactly what he said? I seem to recall a document that may or may not have been from PPAG stating much the same thing. So I guess I should throw the question open.

I'm just interested in your technique I guess. So, would you say that you only question the integrity of your opponents, and of statements made which you disagree with?

Never really thought about it but it does seem to make sense. However, in this case, if the statement was "Portobello park is the only large open space in western portobello" or something similar to that, then I do not feel that the statement has integrity and its not because Portobelo Park is not in Portobello.

(I'm going to add this to the Schools debate)

I think I'm a bit closer to understanding your method now.

If you do not feel a statement has integrity - would you say that you would rather force your opponent to prove its integrity than show your hand?

That is, if you know something or have information - why not just say it?

Although I believe the statement was as I have reported . I cannot be 100% certain a) Exactly what was said? which in turn meant b) I couldn't ascertain the basis the statement was made.

The only information I had was that if Portobello Park is in western portobello then the figgate park most certainly is and its a large open space, as I said, it as long as the Meadows. Rosefiled and Brighton Park are west of Portobello park as are Jessfield and Portobello bowling clubs. Of course these parks are nowhere near as large as Portobello Park is or will be after the development. But they are still sizeable and they are not used to anything like capacity.

So we have a situation where local residents of Portobello Park will still have a large and possibly the largest open space in either Northern, Southern, Eastern or Western "Portobello". It is still quite a fortunate and enviable position to be in.

If stephen had said this is the only sizeable sporting facility in western portobello area the argument would only be about location and I would not need to question the integrity of the statement.

Why not just say "you forgot Figgate Park" or "what about Figgate Park" ?

I cannot speak for Porty whom I believe your question was directed at, but I can state that if I was say, making a presentation to the full Edinburgh Council, I believe the onus would be on me to check the integrity of my data/statement. That is not to say that if I made a mistake I am a person that lacks integrity but clearly in such circumstances my statement/data would. I would have no problem whatsoever if someone wanted to question the integrity of the information I have used. It is certainly the way it used to be when I had to present information to Senior Mangement in my previous corporate life. 8)

Well, I would not want to insult Stephen by suggesting that he simply forgot a substantial park. He only lives 500m from Figgate Park. Also, from what I understand, during his St Marks speech he actually proposed decanting a few thousand students into Figgate Park. If that is what Stephen proposed at a public meeting on April 20th? Then just two weeks later forgetting doesn't really stack up, does it?

I think the best he can hope for is Governator. I think you have to have been "Booooooorn in the USA" to be the president.

I think he should base his career on sports-warrior-politico dimple chinned arts-slashing Jesse Ventura :
