Talk 107 - talk radio for Edinburgh

Post by Dadaist » 29 Mar 2006, 11:18

Apparently their phone-in this morning is about beaches in Edinburgh - and Portobello has been mentioned.

Is anyone listening? I can't get their stream going at the moment.

They did a show on the PHS situation about 3 weeks ago.

I didn't hear it and I've only known one person mention it. Simon Pia was the host/DJ.

I'm glad there's a local talk station.

It's quite good - apart from the lousy presenters, boring content and cringeworthy adverts.

So, what do you think about the weather? Do you think the rain is on for the day or will it clear up this afternoon. What do you think? Phone us, text us - tell us what you think the weather will be like. What about tomorrow? Do you think it will be rainy all week? Phone us, text us and tell us what the weather is like where you are. So this morning we're talking about the weather. It's very rainy here where I am. What do you think? Is it going to fair up later on? Phone us, text us and tell us what you think....ad nauseam.

Much later, the 'researcher' arrives with a copy of the Evening News

So, what do you think about the strike then? Were you on strike? What's it all about then? Was your partner on strike? What about your neighbour? What do you think about the strike? Phone us, text us - tell us what you think about the strike etc etc

Later still

So, earlier we were talking about the weather. Is it still raining where you are? Phone us, text us blah blah blah

Impeccable - right on the money. It really is like that. I dread to think what the evening "shock jock" sounds like....

Bob, with quality satire like this I can safely retire or maybe change tack because it's quite safe in your hands. JP has the surreal aspect covered.

I think I will do a Rosie Nimmo, clear out any existing junk satire I have lying around and concentrate on and start perfecting my Macin-"spare" -tyre impressions. Maybe do a new set of Argument Cards too.

You think? Foxy is fed up with my testosterone - now there's one lady with real balls.

I have a very limited understanding of the difference between the surreal and the abstract.

Is a cup, spoon and saucer of a wrong texture surreal or abstract?

All I know is that a big floppy clock is surreal - so is it the case that surreal stuff is ordinary objects depicted in a strange way, and abstract is stuff which doesn't exist and can only be imagined?

I think I get them the wrong way round sometimes - what does the "sur" bit in sur-real mean?

Top Tip - if you are doing a google image search on 'big floppy clock'......

More.
Or, really...
http://www.answers.com/SURREALISM
[French surréalisme : sur-, beyond (from Old French; see sur–) + réalisme, realism (from réalité, realism, from Medieval Latin reālitās, from reālis, real; see real1).]
There you go, it's beyond real...

Weird then - if it's "beyond" real - it still relates to real items, just depicted in an odd way. Whereas the truly un-real is actually classed as abstract. In my limited understanding.

er, it means "Super-real", and was coined by Guillaume Appollinaire, whose poetry and plays, notably Les Mamelles Des Tiresias (The Breasts Of Tiresias - I was in a production of this once, when I used to tread the boards - I'll try and find the script - it's fab) inspired Breton etc who wrote The Surrealist Manifesto, none of which I can remember, but I intend to find it and re-read it.

Abstract is just a cover-all term for anything that shows reality in an unreal/unusual way. I think.

So a floppy clock or a furry cup could be both surreal - surrealism being the movement they sprung from - and abstract - both being everyday objects depicted in a most un-everyday way.

JP.

Actually, the Living Carpets with their furry faces are quite surreal, aren't they?

They should really drink from JPs' furry cup instead of their glass tumblers.

Ah it's *hair* - the photo was a bit fuzzy and I was convinced it was a cup, saucer and spoon made of toast.

Abstract art is conceptual; now Dadaist, don't say it's mental!
Whereas, surrealism is to do with the subconscious, basically to remove any preconceptions i.e. why are we repulsed at a hairy cup? Only because we have a preconception that cups are smooth. :D
