During the brief period of co-operation between the US and the USSR during WW2, detailed blueprints of the Soviet T-34 tank (and indeed a complete specimen) were sent by Stalin's engineers to the Americans.

Highlights of the US findings :

1. The fuel filter did not actually filter fuel and was of such awful contruction that the only conclusion was that it had been built by saboteurs.

2. Parts of the tank were so similar to existing American designs that, after enquiry and comparison, it was found that some parts of the T-34 construction could only have come from espionage.

The T-34 was also a marvel of speed and simplicity. Whereas German tanks were precision engineered and needed refined fuel, the T-34 ran on 2-stroke : Russians used to mix captured German motor oil and aviation fuel and use that in their tanks.

Estimates vary, but the USGS says at least 1,000 million grams, or roughly 1,000 tons of material enters the atmosphere every year and makes its way to Earths surface.

Tantrum of the week A sulking husband has spent 15 years living in a tree after a row with his wife. Kapila Pradhan, 45, moved into jungle in the Indian state of Orissa, but last week his mother has appealed to him to come down. He plans to stay put, reports The Daily Telegraph, but might be tempted home by a hot meal. “Since I left I have hardly had any cooked food,â€

Watched a programme last night on the history of ready meals. Britain consumes almost as many as the entire US population and 50% of the European total.

I burnt the sausages tonight, but only on one side, so I hid the burnt side in the mash and covered it with spaghetti hoops. Don't think they've noticed yet.

THE true extent of Edinburgh's cocaine problem has been laid bare by an Evening News investigation which uncovered traces of the drug in two-thirds of the city's top bars and clubs.

The tumbling cost of cocaine has seen it become the drug of choice for growing numbers of young clubbers and drinkers.

It has lost its image from the 80s and 90s as a "yuppie drug" - with users now as likely to be a shop assistant as a bank executive.

Neil Numb, events manager at The Edinburgh Clubbing Forum, which represents city clubbers and has more than 2000 members, said: "It is still a very secretive thing and it really depends on what social circles you move in.

While we're on the subject (ooh, not very tangential then), a bolt of lightning travels at 435,000 km/h and can heat the air round it to 28,000 degrees C, several times hotter than the surface of the sun, and round the world every second 100 of them hit the ground.

A cheery 26 bus driver was so cheery early one morning that he spent half his shift with the polis after a paasenger reported him for suspected drink driving!

(He's still cheery though :P - thought it was funny)
