Incident outside Scotmid

I was concerned this afternoon while in one of our local shops to hear of a mugging today of a woman outside Scotmid. The assistant didn't have full details, but said that they were first aware something was wrong when lots of police appeared on the scene. She believes that a woman was mugged by two men outside Scotmid, while there were quite a few people around. Does anyone know anything more about this?

My wife heard this story too but I don't have any further information. Let's hope the Police caught the people responsible for this.

As I came out of Scotmid this afternoon,I saw swarms of police up and down Bath St, in the gardens and over garden walls. Looked pretty serious. I hope the person is okay.

Yes, I was there just after it happened. I came out of Scotmid and couldn't get down the path for the crowd of people hanging around. Apparently a couple had grabbed a youngish womans handbag but a man who saw it happen managed to catch them. As they tried to run off they knocked over an elderly woman who seemed unhurt but rather shocked by it all. Unfortunately the male mugger managed to escape but the female was still in an armlock when the police arrived. She was screaming her head off calling her apprehender an ******* bampot and did he see her stealing the ******* handbag.
I just hope the poor old lady who got knocked over is okay and not suffering any serious after effects.

Oh, and the woman who was mugged had two young children with her (not her own, she was looking after them while their mum was collecting their older brother from school) A traumatising event for them too.

Thanks for filling in the blanks and correcting the story that it had been two male muggers, Teddygirl. Sounds truly frightening for the woman and the two young kids and the elderly woman who was knocked over.

It's the first time I've heard of this type of attack here in Portobello and I hope it'll be the last.

The man who tackled the couple deserves to be commended for his brave action. I trust the police will be able to trace the mugger who got away.

Renews my faith in people somewhat, there's so many stories nowadays of people "not wanting to get involved", that it's good that someone did on this occasion. Pity the other one got away.

Yes, the man who was hanging on to the female was incredibly brave and not in the slightest intimidated by her ranting.
There's every chance she will be known to the police and they may well know her partner in crime and hopefully justice will be done.

I agree with Marya, the man who tackled the couple and held on to the ranting woman should be commended.
I hope the two offenders are caught.
It is frightening that such attacks can take place in broad daylight.

It's a good job "Franck and his Vigilantes" don't shop at Scotmid....
The offending couple would have to answer to the Guardian Angels Porty Chapter. (see "Spare Wheel Stolen" thread)

Reminds me that when I called into McColls last Thursday evening, there was a couple in there helping themselves to anything they could fit in their bags and pockets. The staff confronted them and didn't call the police. It didn't seem to come as any surprise to the staff either.

I hope the people involved and the witnesses are all ok - it can be pretty traumatising even to witness.

I'm sure viewers of this forum dont need your assistance to view threads, it not as if there is vast swathes of new threads is there?But c'mon now, lets not drag this out. I've already said my 'vigilante' comment was tongue in cheek.

For the record, I was in Scotmid on Sunday ensuring no-one read papers without paying by setting my steely glare onto any potential rule-breakers.

Well done to the guy who caught one of the culprits

Actually, my "vigilante" comment was also meant to be "tongue in cheek."

Well done Apprehender, although I am sure that some people would think that an arm lock on an alleged mugger, who has not yet had the benefit of a trial, was way too violent and an infringement of rights.

Not me. Torture and assault are too violent though. An arm lock sounds like a good idea if you ask me.

An update on yesterdays events. It wasn't the younger woman who was mugged but the old lady who was knocked over. The younger woman went to help and managed to get the bag back when the "hero" apprehended the muggers. According to one of the children who was present,there were two bad men and one bad lady.He told me this himself today. He also told me that she had been drinking a bottle of Vodka prior to events.
