evening news story

Post by janekbradley » 27 Sep 2005, 11:43

Hi,

Really interested in doing a story about Radio Free Porty - I usually speak to Bob Jefferson but I can't get hold of him today. Could someone who's organising it give me a call on 0131 620 8745?

Thanks!

Well, I've just had my run-in with the Media. I was happy to give them one of Radio Free Porty's stock photos, from our media library, of me DJing but was unwilling to let the photographers into Dada Towers to snap me at my workstation.

So they may or may not run the story - it depends on the picture people.

Right, back to business.

New artist coming to the roster - DJ Pace, a bona fide luminary of Edinburgh's drum 'n' bass underground - I don't know how long his set is but he recorded it at the weekend and I can't wait to get my grubby paws on it.

Marya - yours was his favourite set!

I'm going to start rotating some of your second (and in the case of Jackson, 3rd, 4th, nth) sets but would appreciate feedback on what to play and when - it was easy at the start with just everyone's first set but I don't know how frequently to play different sets from the same dj - or whether to just put everything on one big loop.

Any thoughts?

I say go for the big loop for now. The sets so far are a pretty nice mix of tempo and mood, I think.

Perhaps in time we could do some themed sets, you know, Sunday morning easy listening, Friday/Saturday night dance/in your face type stuff??
And weekly slots for the totally ridiculous stuff like what Ali makes me listen to here at home.  or prog, blues, etc.

Sunday morning is earmarked for Beach Babe's Love Songs which is currently in pre-production.

And there was I working on themes such as:

Sci-fi and other Weirdness
Songs of Provocation and Profanity
The Three Jimmys (Hendrix, Shand and Krankie)
.....
perhaps a late night slot?
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

Dude, sounds like the business. I was wanting to do a collection of profane songs - perhaps you and I can do a dj soundclash?

Dadaist vs Rathbone - "Expletives Not Deleted" ?

I'm afraid the radio player is all over the place just now - totally unlistenable. it's "stop starting" (as Vic Reeves would say) constantly. :x

It's my set that's up just now too.

Oh, it's settled a bit now - typical!

Right - can we start the ball rolling for a collection for a year's rental of a commercial shoutcast server?

All those who want to contribute can PM me so that everything is anonymous. We can then arrange for you to get some cash to me. I will post on here how much has been raised and what/where we're going to get a proper hosting service.

The services these companies offer are scalable, so if we raise extra then we can increase the quality, max no. of concurrent users and obviously the time period of the rental.

The cost is worked out as no. of streams * quality. FM radio is 64kbps and I'm proposing we go with 80kbps with max users set at 10, which works out at 5 pounds a month ... *12 == 60 quid.

the new address for radio free porty :

http://83.149.101.8:8004

i have taken the plunge and paid the nice people 13 pounds. fiver setup charge and 8 quid for the first month

let's see how this goes......thank you for the pledges so far......

Without doubt, amongst the blizzard of excellent music we've been listening to over the past 6 days (seems longer doesn't it?) I am going to tentatively put my finger on "Uptown Top Ranking" on JPs second set, which I just heard for the first time. Absolutely spot on my frequency.

Watch out for :

1. beatmatched mixing - I have some fancy software on the go and whilst most tracks fade in and out, there are 2 at the start of Marya's which I've got mixed really nicely - listen out for when "radiation vibe" ends and "fun lovin criminal" starts

2. me breaking into the stream and playing a few "extra" tracks live. i spotted 3 listeners last night and hijacked their audio with a small 10-minute mix.

Note for Mac users - this does not work well in iTunes, which interprets it as a podcast and attempts to download the whole lot instead of streaming it, resulting in the beachball of death (mac users will know what that means!). No problems in real player though!

I've tried it on 2 macs, and it's worked fine on both - it downloads a .pls file (never heard of that one before - oh, it means playlist, according to the geek at work next to me) to the desktop, then opens up into itunes once you've clicked on it. Song names come up etc - marvellous, and no dreaded beachball.

Real player seems fine too - song names don't come up though.

Ali's set on at the moment. Rock on.

JP.

Thanks JP, downloaded onto the desktop and clicked, and everything's working ok -- Kirsty and her endless days on at the moment.

Problem seems to come if you copy the address and attempt to paste it into iTunes. (i.e. I tried that again and got the beachball again).
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

I guess this is something we can discuss as for now I've been mixing down to one big (half a gig!) wav, but just for convenience.

Maybe I'll re-do things so that the individual track names come up, as well as the dj name. Hmm.

Anyway, get ready folks, cos if tonight's photoshoot with DJ Pace (who is more than happy to get the exposure) goes well, we'll be in tomorrow's Evening News, on page 3.

Just listening to Mr. Priest's new set.

Excellent stuff but not much I've heard of before so I'm having difficulty working out which track is the one currently playing.

Ah, the Stones have just come on, so I can now say that the Ananda Shanker track is class.

If there is a way to show the track titles as they play (for us plebs on winamp  ) that would be great.

Sure thing ecm. Up til now I've been mixing down to one giant file, but I will do it so that track titles appear.

Is nobody else scared about being in the Evening News?

So did I imagine it showing the tracks last night? I could have done I suppose - I was pretty much Dylan'd out.

It seems to depend on what you play through?

I'm sorry I've lost the ability to type just now as Ali's "Hill Billy Hula" track has just come on.
Truly wonderfully silly stuff.
