Are you touring while you're there or staying put? It looks real easy to nip across to the States too.

When are you going?foxy wrote:Never been to Canada before and I don't have any rellies there or anything. Just chose it because we had heard lots of people say how good a place it is and also because its easy to get a direct flight from Scotland. Really looking forward to itArachnid wrote:Have you been to Toronto before, Foxy?
We've been going to visit our friends in Mississauga, just outside Toronto, every second year since 2000. It's a great place!! We'll be due another visit next year! Pity it's not this year, could've tried to bag each other!!!
You'll love it. The people are very, very friendly and make you feel welcome.
There's so much to see and do that you'll have to go back again!!! There's the "CN Tower" with the glass floor which gives you a weird feeling when you look down!!! The " skydome" is the place to go if you want to watch Baseball! And you can't go to Toronto without visiting Niagara Falls. A trip on the wee boat will take you close to the falls!! If the wind's blowing the right way, you'll get wet!!!
I could go on and on but this is only a forum, so better stop!!!!
I tend to spend any holiday time puttering around parts of Britain. There are so many parts of it I haven't explored - in fact, there are still parts of Furness (where My Other Half lives) I haven't explored (even a few pubs we've missed!!
) - and the nearby Lake District. A couple of weeekends ago, we had a trip on Coniston Water on the restored Victorian steam yacht 'Gondola'. I can highly recommend it to anyone - so much more pecaful and sedate than a boat with an internal combustion engine - just gliding around the beautiful lake.
I will be doing a bit of travelling down here as well.
I do love the Northern isles, Teddygirl

I'm like you Jay, love to visit different parts of our own country, there are so many beautiful places. We would probably never have got round to visiting Shetland if it hadn't been for our eldest working up there for the summer so it was the ideal opportunity to go.(accomodation provided being an incentive)
Last week I was up staying with my Mum in Huntly so visited a few of the nice wee places around there. We found a lovely wee place for a "fly cup".....it was on a farm near Lumsden where they breed Angora goats and they sell various mohair goods like jumpers and throws etc. Apparently they are famous for their socks which can be worn for a year without being washed, just an airing at night suffices. Lots of famous people including Prince Charles wear them.( The Queen was supposed to be visiting the place today.)
The tearoom was in the conservatory looking out onto the garden where lots of fancy chickens and roosters were pecking about....very quaint ,and the home made scones and clotted cream were to die for

This sounds like the ideal present for My Other Half!!!!!
But the whole place sounds like a lovely place to visit. Definitely on my 'to do' list! Thanks for the tip, Teddygirl.

Where in Cumbria, Robin? Half my life gets spent in Furness which was dragged kicking and screaming into Cumbria in 1974, and still thinks it's in Lancashire - but I tend to know Cumbria quite well. Some really lovely places, off the beaten track and quiet as well as beautiful

We stayed in the Lakelands caravan park, we did pop into Furness for a spot of shopping, and went to the estate near lakeland but cant remember the name of it, one with the car museum which was right up my street! Also hired a boat on Coniston WaterJay wrote:Where in Cumbria, Robin? Yes, Morecambe Bay is sublimely beautiful - and then there's the Duddon Estuary on the other side of the peninsular. Totally gorgeous area. If you go there by train, like I do, you actually cross the Bay on a couple of trestle bridges - that is a wonderful experience. I love Coniston Water too - less crowded than the Windermere or Ullswater

Even though we go on holidays abroad, Mr Arachnid and I also like to visit parts of our own country. As Teddygirl and Jay say, there are many, many beautiful places to visit here!
We were up at Newtonmore for five days in February and even at that time of the year, it may be a bit cold but it's really beautiful with all the snow, and all the roads are kept clear so no problem touring about all the many places and venues that are still open at that time of year! And they're much quieter too! The Highland Wildlife Park was one of the places, where you could drive around ( like blair drummond) and see all the animals roaming free. Your given a tape to listen to about the animals as you drive round and there's walks you can take with the ranger when you get to the park centre. Spent a couple of hours at the " Waltzing waters" ( the hotel gave us free tickets). We were the only two in there!!It must've looked quite funny, the two of us sitting in the back of the theatre!!! ( our own private show!!!)
I was born in Silloth in Cumbria, so I'm kinda' drawn to that area every now and again!!! Usually we stay at Keswick at a lovely bed and breakfast and tour about from there. It's also beautiful scenery there( when it's not raining!!! ). I love it! I must be due a visit soon!!!!

My family and I left Silloth when I was only four months old and came to live at Joppa. But we still had family and friends there and went for holidays often, until the aerodrome closed in the early sixties. We had some lovely holidays there! Next time we go down to the Lakes, I must try and have a wee visit to Silloth again!Epykat wrote:Prombabe and I know Silloth well Arachnid! My brother in law worked at the foam factory
Going to Keith tomorrow, not really for a holiday as we're just staying for one night, but it's nice to get away from the house for a wee while
Husband breeds and shows budgies and there's a show at Keith on Sunday!
It's a lovely journey to get there and I think that the weather is going to be good, so the country side will look really beautiful.
Won't have to take my " winter woollies"!!!

Having a birthday tomorrow too which will be spent partly up in the air, and it will last a bit longer as Toronto is five hours behind us!!!arachnid wrote:Time to resurrect this thread, it's that time of year again!!!!![]()
