Campfire

Hello!

I am new here in Portobello, arrived 2 months ago and what I know is that I won't move away from here:)

I'd like to invite some of my friends to spend a day+evening on the beach. We would like to make a campfire there, but my question is, if is allowed to do that there?

I don't know the answer to your question I'm afraid, but I do know that it is tradition here to have bonfires all along the beach at New Year and on Bonfire/Guy Fawkes night on the 5 November.

There used to be a huge fire at the bottom of Baths Street every November 5th...

Welcome from me too. I'm glad you like Portobello as much as we do. I don't know the answer either. I suppose your best bet, if you want to cover yourself, would be to pop into the Police Station and ask there.

In case you don't know where the Police Station is narkoradko, it's the building covered in scaffolding, on the High Street, near the traffic lights at the junction of Brighton Place/Bath Street/High Street.

I've always understood it's perfectly ok to have a fire on the foreshore, I'm sure some Googling would confirm that. Saying that you've probably better off (and the beach too) with a few disposable barbecues!

I think, the best idea is to ask the policemen, thanks for suggestion!

So now my only problem is to organize some wood, if the policemen say OK;)

There's a fair few other references on their site. Lots of legal mumbo... Lighting a fire is a public right, but not a statutory right - whatever that might be. Bylaws can be put in place to restrict the lighting of fires (e.g. they have that at Aberlady NR).

Anyway, I'm off to enjoy the beech, and have my burgers & sausages from the butchers for a BBQ later.

Hi Narkoradko,

Welcome to Porty and the forum. What with you and Wangi discussing campfires, barbies and the like you've made the sun disappear.

We were walking on the sand earlier this morning along at Fishherrow and it was sooo hot. The sand was almost too hot to walk on.
Was all set to dig out the shorts for this afternoon but not sure if it'll be worth it now.

Hope you have a fun time anyway.

I don't live in Porty anymore (shame shame) but when I did there were often bonfire's on the beach (particularly along at the Seafield end above the high water line). The Police never seemed to mind and the baked potatoes always seemed to taste just a little bit better with that tang of sea salt.

It's 12 months tomorrow since we all came to view magnolia mansions and we have been local now for 9 months. We have yet to do campfires, deterred by the idea of cleaning up after!

I rather suspect you may have misunderstood this thread. We are talking about a campfire, whereas you clearly have a camp fire in mind. It's not the same thing.

In an attempt to bring this back "on thread" there were a couple of fine fires on the beach last night to mark the longest day. A police car drove past at around 1.30 am and didn't bother stopping so I guess they were happy with it.
