Good Chip Shops?

Post by sconegrrl » 12 May 2005, 21:21

Can anyone recommend a good chip shop round these here parts?

I had a rubbish fish supper on Sunday. Admittedly, Sunday may be a bit of a crap day to get a supper, but surely that shouldn't matter that much. This was inedible and went in the bin. Bleugh!

So where can I get nice fresh chips, fluffy fish and crispy(ish) batter? Mmmm.

Carlos on the High Street can be v good, but it is a bit 'hit and miss' as sometimes they so seem to have been under the light a bit too long.

However, I usually only get fish and chips after being out drinking, and it seems to me the 'perceived' quality of the fish and chips is directly related to how drunk I am

We only ever get from Carlo's in Porty - normally quite good. Have been disapointed when trying St. Andrews, and have never tried any of the other ones.

Carlo's is sometimes really good but can often let itself down. Giovanni's on Northfield Broadway is consistently good - it would be the choice of the rest of the PoP clan. 8)

If you are prepared to ask for something other than a rubbish fish supper you could try any chipper. Maybe they thought you said rubber.

After a poor supper from the St Andrew's once I've always gone to Carlo's, and I've never had a dodgy one there. Apparently their pizzas are good too.

Got to disagree with the majority here - I have binned a burger from Carlos cause the roll was all wet underneath. I found there chips to be either soggy and yuck or wee crisps of fat. I got a pizza once and the topping just slid off. I gave the benefit of the doubt for long enough. They are busy in there, can't think why.

I only have a chippy once a month or so - can recommend St Andrews 16" pizza for £7 ! Black olives and mushrooms - really good. Nice staff as well.

Barbeque Grill (next to the PDSA) have half decent chips.

North Berwick fish suppers rock!

Have to agree with you MrsMc about the pizzas from St Andrews, they're very nice and good value too. I used to like Carlos pizzas as well but haven't had one for a long time. Haven't had anything from there for ages so can't really comment. I used to find them a hit or a miss, depends when you go I guess, if things have been lying around for a while.

Another North Berwick fan. :D

Ah yes, that great British delicacy - the fish supper. At its best it can be splendid street food but it almost invariably disappoints. The fish should, but often doesn't, taste fresh and feel firm, the batter crisp and crunchy without being over-cooked. A little salt and vinegar by all means, but brown sauce? You have got to be joking. Believe me, there is no culinary use for chip shop brown sauce.

Even when the fish does come up to standard I find that the chips often let it down. Lurking underneath, a greasy, limp congealed mess of vandalised potato.

As with the kebab, our experience of this dish is often clouded by alcohol, masking how truly awful it generally is.

My advice? Make your own. You could even wrap it in newspaper for added authenticity.

Oh dear, it was actually Carlos (I think... the one that's kind of opposite the hardware store?) that provided me with the offending supper. I think it was a Sunday night thing, but that shouldn't really be an excuse.

I agree that Giovanni's on Northfield Broadway are good, but I had hoped that being next to the sea would mean a plethora of decent chip shops close by.

Mind you, it's maybe a good thing for my waistline! Although... it is said that fish and chips are the healthiest fast food option (compared to curries, pizza, Chinese).

I quite like a kebab normally after vast quantities of drink though. When one of my friends was pregnant she craved doner kebabs and ate up to 4 a week!
