Porty Crime Report

I have just noticed the Porty Crime Report section on the front page. I am aware it is not possible to make comments on the board but I wanted to say what a good idea this is and thanks for setting it up. Interesting report re. the drugs find / arrests.

Jamesie - it's a public forum so everyone should be able to see it.

DG - thanks! The guy in charge of media relations at L&B seems to understand what I'm trying to do and is very supportive. Porty Crime Report is just the beginning. I'm hoping to arrange a meeting with the new Inspector sometime soon and to persuade him that Portobello Online is a great opportunity for him to engage directly with the community.

For starters, wouldn't it be good to have a pic of each of our community beat cops so we all know what they look like? Perhaps a regular message from the Inspector to inform us of local police intitiatives? Maybe even an online surgery?

Always interesting to see stuff like this as long as its not presented in a Daily **** sort of way. Can we have some balancing reports of non-crime too, Bob?

Along the lines of

'3,500 people passed through Portobello High Street every day for the last three weeks without incident. Within that time frame three arrests for drug offences were made (see detailed report elsewhere)'

And

'PC Bloggs reports that some young ne'r-do-wells have responded positively to their community service activities and are reported to be helping old ladies cross the road with a smile and a skip.'

I think that the new crime report board is a valuable addition and of community interest, but agree with Mr M that we've to keep it all in perspective. I remember in the dim and distant past we even had someone start up a thread that encouraged us to list all the things we liked about living in Portobello, to counteract what he saw as a lot of negativity.
A friend told me the other day that their local Edinburgh residents Association had, until recently, published their newsletter on the web. One newsletter made mention of an incident that the Police had refused to attend and the perception of local residents was that since then houses in their locality were more difficult to sell. I'm not citing this because of concern of a property slump in Porty, but as a reminder that we're all here because we LIKE living in Portobello

The serious incidents are few and far between and I challenge anyone to show me an area that doesn't have 'yoof related' crime.
One way to balance things out Mr M might be to resurrect that old thread. Can someone else find it? - it made good reading

For legal reasons, L&B Police will often remove a press release.

How can The Polis remove a press release? Once it's out it's out...

I mean simply, mr m, that they will remove the press release from their website and therefore our link to it will no longer work and therefore we will delete that thread.

The idea is simply to link directly to these press releases without having to read the story second-hand in the EN. Thankfully, serious crime is not something we encounter on a daily basis in our community and so you should not expect to see much action on this forum.

As for youth disturbances, well I'm afraid that's just become so 'normal' that's it's not considered news-worthy.

Yes, let's have some good news - I could do with some.
