Space at top of Marlborough St

General discussion - "gossip and tittle tattle"

No dead bodies, but a hoover, a full-length mirror and plenty of other stuff. I would like to pay tribute to DG, who was the only other person to turn up in the end, despite having just been stung by a wasp. What a trooper!

As you can see we have removed most of the shrubs and weeds, rubbish, dog dirt etc. We can't do any more now until the rubbish has been removed - hopefully some time tomorrow. I'll have another look at it once it has been cleared up and see what still has to be done.

This is a very grateful Phil, whose flat overlooks the area we tidied.

Well, yesterday was certainly a good start to clearing this area up. The heap of thngs for removal is still there. I pressume this will be lifted soon.

Yes, I was stung for the first time by a wasp and had a peculiar and none to pleasant reaction. Better today though!

Thanks, Sandra.

Yesterday I found myself having to line all the snails I found in the muck on the wall so as not to harm them. I even dodged the wee spiders. However, my will-to-kill certainly came alive each time I saw a wasp! Revenge is sweet - or just purely satisfying!

DG, I finally got hold of one of the Task Force Managers yesterday. He didn't seem terribly happy that the rubbish wasn't all bagged up but promised to leave a message for the Sunday crew, who evidently didn't fancy the job either.

I'll make a few calls tomorrow and see if I can get the matter resolved. Thanks again for your help. I think the next project is maybe my garden. Any volunteers?

I would've if I could've, Bob. Sorry I couldn't. Have they taken away the hoover et al. yet?

I'm glad DG did not have a lasting reaction to the wasp.

I'm just back from work and have noticed that some-one has made a good job of clearing away the rubble we left on Saturday. It looks much better now.

Glad to hear it. I'll get a chance to check it out tomorrow on my way to the gym and I hope to speak to the owner on Saturday if he's around. Will keep you updated.

Maybe we'll have a Phase 2 and Jay and others who couldn't make it last time can come along.

It looks a lot better now. Thank you to those who turned up.
I'm sorry that I missed it but I took holidays and missed the reminder that was posted. However I have now registered at the library to go on-line so I can still get my fix of Porty Online if I'm off.

Would it be possible to get some kind of grant to repair/replace the railings which would stop dogs getting in there?

Yes, the owner would be eligible for a grant to repair/replace the railings and the wall. We have discussed this and I am hopeful that he will apply. In the meantime, once the tree has been removed, we need to get a temporary fence of some sort erected to prevent access and perhaps some stone chips put down.

Does anyone know if the owner ever applied for a grant to replace the fencing? The weeds are coming back and whilst left open as it is it continues to be a dog's/cat's toilet. Or indeed a general dumping ground.

It seems a shame that the hard work of Bob and DG has not been maintained by the owner.

You know Mimpty I was think the other day its such a shame DG and Bob's tidy up has not been kept up by the owner - its beginning to look a right mess again.

Yes, I had noticed that the area is becoming a mess again. I'm not aware of the owner taking any further clean up action - let alone acknowledge the hard work we put in :( . I suppose he didn't ask for help in the first place. I still see fluffy dog and blonde owner frequenting the spot

Bob, the tree that you...ahmm...went a bit too far with while :? 'pruning' seems to have survived. Has some greenery on it again :)

Last night, coming home from work, I got to this spot and was aware of some one behind me.
I looked round to see him approach the side of the building - I thought he was making for one of the ground floor windows.
He was either a burglar or had lost his keys, I thought. But no, he started to pee against the wall. :x Lovely.
I decided it was not a good time to remind him of the toilets in Bath Street.

Rubber gloves or very heavy duty gardening gloves an essential, I would say.

Just back in and see that there are 2 men cutting down trees at the top of Marlborough Street. Glad to see there are no nests in the big tree :D

I noticed the tree had been cut back when I passed today DG. Do you think they'll do the rest when their chainsaw's better?

I see that this area has again been recently cleaned up following the breaking of one of the shops windows last week. There had been a very large and long plank of wood lying in and outside of this space for around a week until some b***** broke the shop window with it.

Anyway, the space looks so much better.

Yes, I had noticed on Saturday that it was badly overgrown again and I was starting to feel quite dispirted after all our hard work to tidy it up, so I'm delighted that someone (presumably the owner?) has taken action.

There have been 3 men and a mini JCB there all day digging up the roots, crisp packets, empty cans of tennents etc.

I miss that tree. It was valuable as a wind gauge in the morning when deciding whether or not to cycle to work. And Baby Priest misses it because she liked watching the leaves while dancing to Kraftwerk.

I chuckled at that pun, but have just realised, almost an hour later, that it works on more than one level.

Respect.

They're probably employed by Lawrence and are actually digging foundations for a three storey block of flats :D

I saw these 2 guys working their way along the street - one was digging small holes and the other was filling them in again. I asked them what they were doing and they said it was the guy that plants the trees day off.
