Figgate Whins

I've just come back from work and there are 5 or more ploice cars outside the Figgate Whins pub, the area is tapped off and full of police. There were some boxes on the pavement that have now been removed. A couple of guys taking pictures with very large cameras. Does any-one know what has happened? I hope no-one has been hurt.

(I have noticed some of their customers still trying to get past the police to get in for a drink!?

Beat me to it DG! Epy Junior came in about an hour ago and said that it looked like somebody had been stabbed.......don't know any more but it should reach the Daily Record by Friday

Yes, Epykat, that was my first thought. The pub has been particularly noisey and unruley since the new owner took over. I see that they have now closed and still there are a few regulars gathering outside, looking confused and disorientated...

Ooh, I wonder if that is anything to do with the guy covered in blood [from his face/nose?] that I saw as I got off the bus at the Town Hall aking his way along the High Street from Bath Street westwards at about 5 tonight??

Unfortunately, Ifstar, we live directly opposite this pub. Had some ongoing problems with the way it's been managed of late. However, things seemed to have quietened down for a while...until yesterday by the sounds of it. Certainly some of the people leaving the pub after the incident around 6 - 7 pm were unable to stand, let alone walk along the street. Surely, the service providers have a duty of care to the public using the facilities...

I've heard very loud, tuneless karaoke being bellowed out from the pub on many an evening when I've felt the need to go to Kost Koncsious for a bar of chocolate

Well, unfortunately yes. When the new owner took over we heard music and the shouting of conversations over the music until the early hours of the morning, particularly on Monday and Tuesday mornings for some reason, doors wide open (apparently due to lack of internal ventilation!). To cut a long, long, boring and tedious story short things have now quietened right down, the pub shuts on time, keep their doors closed and are quieter. We are now enjoying peaceful sleeps and can have people up to ours at night without having to constantly apologise for the noise ... and, we can hear our TV in the living room (not something we do much of but nice to have the chance when we want to!).

On the other paw, as the Figgate Whins was known as 'bandit country' before Portobello existed, then perhaps that particular pub is aptly named! ?

PS When I was passing the Pop Inn at 6ish last night, it appeared to be closed? A VERY unusual occurrence, surely!

Why not? If it was a wine bar full of the Porty "hoi polloi" would it be a different story?

Somebody told me they've been shut down by the licensing board but can't remember what for!

Actually Jamesie, Yes...the hoi polloi dont tend to stab each other in the neck quite as often

I've just been told by a trader nearby the Pop Inn [or Pop-In as the sign says] that someone new has taken over that establishment.

There was someone inside as I passed who'd taken down the notices in the windows that were there an hour earlier.

May be able to find out more tomorrow from a sourse via work!

I thought they were just taking a holiday.

Dalriada must be doing ok as they are taking holidays 14-18th Feb. Thought they would be trying to rake it in on the 14th.

It's good to hear that Dalraida is doing so well. Sizzlers is also doing well - seems you're better booking at the weekend to make sure you get a seat! Nice to see local business's doing this well.

I had heard that that their license was due for review and renemal this month.
