It's very late and ecm and I are in Brugges struggling home from a night spent in one of the great bars in the world - Bruges Bjertje (the Brown Bear) - 350 odd different beers and each one with its own unique glass (we managed to taste half a dozen different beers each and now we've found an internet cafe and I've not used the "delete" button as much in my life trying to knock this post in to shape - .......................... anyway - the whole point of this is that the music playing in here is mainly that terrible naff european disco that brings on neuralgia if your exposed to too much of it.. just thought I would share that with you all - goodnight.  :? :(

I got all my old albums from my parents recently from their loft (we cleared it out for them via car boot sale - I couldn't believe the amount of annuals etc. they had kept from my sister's and my childhood). Albums - a lot of ... did I really like them (how embarrassing) and a load of nostalgic moments. Does anyone know where you can buy a turntable with speakers in Edinbugh which doesn't need the backup of a stereo system? Preferably the type that speakers are internal (which you can just shove under the bed when not in use).

Thanks

Er...I think I knew Joe during the Poll Tax days - if it's the guy who got called Joe 90 after the number of votes he polled in a student election (where the Labourites argued that he had taken enough votes off them to let the Tory through)....ask him....

What can I say, other than You've Got Good Taste? I was a big fan of the Revillos and I remember Eugene and Fay returning from a trip to NY, raving about a band called The Cramps that they had seen in CBGB's, long before anyone had heard of them over here. I saw them play The Stagecoach at Collin, near Dumfries with the original guitarist. They were wild and completely authentic. These recordings prove just how raw and essential they were. For those of you unfamiliar with their work, if you like the White Stripes then you are going to love The Cramps.

I have found myself listening to Johnny Cash live at Folsom Prison. Especially "flushed from the bathroom of your heart".

Yeah, so far so good, especially Willard Grant Conspiracy doing "I still miss someone" and Steve Earle's version of "Hardin wouldn't run".

I should really add to the Big Sap thread but have you ever seen the video for "Hurt"? Amazing version of the song and the video was so beautifully shot and so powerful and moving. Great stuff.

Sounds from CG's deck

Post by curlygirl » 07 Nov 2004, 09:56

Aimee Mann - Lost in Space, very mellow with really good words (especially Invisible Ink) - could err on the depressing side if you're not careful as the songs are about addiction.

Also Nick Cave No More Shall We Part - love his gravelly voice and dark humour.

We're also having a lot of Build Up - Stephen Fishbacher (they sing his songs at Towerbank assemblies!!) - the girls love it!

Great album Curlygirl. I'm a big Aimee fan. I'm off to dig that one out as I haven't played it in a long time.

I'm listening to "Lagrimas Negras" by Bebo and Cigala right now. It's wonderful but does seem too early for it...

Welcome Gadgee.

You obviously didn't hear about the slaying of the Neighbourhood Watch volunteers earlier this year.

Inspired by Porty's recent post on hard disk players, I found my old Rio 500 and downloaded an XP compatible driver, so I'm wired for sound again.

Dropped and dragged a few old faves, starting with a selection from the Cramps. First track up is 'What's Inside A Girl', which features the memorable opening lines:

'Some things baby I just can't swallow
Mama told me that girls are hollow'

They just don't write them like that anymore! And I'll get round to the 21st century once I've finished enjoying the 20th!

Neil Young Greatest Hits, REM Around the Sun, Counting Crows: August and Everything After.

And. I just downloaded Bed and Breakfast Man by Madness, which Ive been trying to locate for ages. I can't wait.

Well there's a man I know
At least I used to years ago
I didn't really mind
He used to come 'round all the time
Of course he had to be fed
I had to give him a bed
He used to kip on my sofa
They used to call him a loafer
I've heard he's changed
A lot since then
But some of his ways
He just can't mend
Told the other day
That he'd offered to pay
He didn't like his dad
He earned all he ever had
He didn't have no shame
He was a master at his game
He never showed his hand
He was the bed and breakfast man
He was, he was the bed and breakfast man...

Not a classic but what a beat!

Not going myself but it'll be a good one, no doubt. Please post a review for us.

Currently listening to Elvis Costello's Delivery Man which is excellent and the new Rufus Wainwright disc which is heavenly.
