Big Wheel for Portobello?

Heritage body calls for relocation of planned big wheel

A BIG wheel planned for the centre of Edinburgh should instead be based in Portobello, a leading heritage group has said.

The Cockburn Association today said a 60-metre Ferris wheel in Princes Street Gardens would spoil views of Edinburgh Castle.

The city council has been in advanced talks with a private firm over the wheel and the Evening News yesterday revealed it could be up and running in the west side of the gardens by next month.

But The Wheel of Edinburgh, which would be paid for and operated by Great City Attractions, would be much more suited to a “pleasure ground” such as Portobello, said heritage bosses.

Eh ...what about Porties conservation status!

Seriously though I actually think that sited in the right place (on the edge of Porty) this could be the spark that gets families coming our way and gives us a boost but would also need a commitment from ELC that they'd back this up with further improvements to make Porty a destination for 'pleasure'. Oer Matron :-)

If we're not careful we'll have well intended, misguided souls speaking on the community's behalf like they did in getting the hovercraft investment potential knocked on the head. I'm still so angry about that in case you cant tell.

There needs to be a 'body, group, whatever' set up to make this happen McDryburn - Porty Pleasure Seekers....?

Im for it....I think but as long as it is not exactly where the wheel is places in the picture. I just bought a house because of the view out to the beach and one side of my view is being blocked by the extension to Towerbank Primary, this would completely block out my view if it was placed where it is in the Scotsman's "mocked" up photo....

Agree positioning would be important.

The old funfair site seems a good place to me.

I thought the main idea behind the big wheel was to attract folk into the city centre, in order to compensate a bit for all the tram disruption?

Isn't going to happen. Remember this is the Cockburn's suggestion being spun into a story; it's not the project promoter suggesting this...

It's probably a tongue in cheek suggestion to fire up the "Porty Against Everything" myth. I reckon Brighton Park would be a good place for it

Porty Against Everything is a myth if only because Porty is overwhelmingly for a school in the park.

The wheel could kick start something good for portobello.

Regardless of whether its real or not - if people want something to happen - they have to make it happen and not rely on 'others' to do so.
