Porty- British Champions

Post by Porty » 19 Feb 2012, 16:58

Today Portobello Water Polo mens team won the British championship. What a fantastic achievement . Mostly local lads they won 8-5. The highest level the game is played at in Britain. Looks like the struggle to persuade the council to install a pool with a moveable floor, paid off.

Centenary Club Portobello take the top spot

Sunday 19th February 2012

It was an emotional win for Portobello in the final of the British Gas Water Polo Championships as they defeated City of Manchester by eight goals to five.

Both teams came out on the attack but the deadlock was not broken until halfway through the first quarter when Manchester had their attacking play converted by Kocic to go one goal up.

Taking advantage of man up, Portobello’s Nuno Oliveira found the back of the net for the Scots with less than two minutes to play. His teammates Ed Grundy and Captain Neilson Rutherford then followed suit, each scoring in the last 60 seconds of the quarter.

Despite winning the swim off, Manchester couldn’t convert their possession into points and Portobello scored on their first play of the quarter, Oliveira again getting the first goal followed by Grundy and Rutherford. A late consolation goal for Kirk of Manchester put the score at 6-2 at half time.

We came here believing we could win

Manchester were not going to go down without a fight and Craig Hammond scored almost immediately for Manchester before Davidson, put distance between the two sides again at the end of the third quarter. Hammond struck home in the dying seconds to put Manchester back in the mix with just eight minutes left to play.

Portobello, who are celebrating their centenary year this year, were not going to let the home side spoil their party and their eighth goal by James Scobie put the game out of the Mancunians’ reach.

Brilliant news about the water polo team. Don't think it was down to the movable floor at the Baths though, pretty sure Porty(the team) has won it in the past without it. This may have been before Portobello was designated Village status. Is it officially a village?

I'm reliably informed that this is the first time ANY team from Scotland has won the British Championship. The competition was previously known as the "deep water" championships. Played in pools that were sufficently deep enough to meet or exceed the rules for Water Polo. The old pool had a permanent shallow end.

Portobello have been beaten finalists 6 times in the past.

Back in 1997 they did win The British Cup, which is a different and lesser competition.

Apparently they were around 35/1 to win it this time around.

I'm surprised Makaveli hasn't put in a row of smiley hand claps for that one. Your humour obviously doesn't tickle his fancy. Talking of which, thanks for the photo of our magnificent victorious water polo team. I'm off for a wee wassail! That is what it means, isn't it?

With this being a celebration and homage thread, it seems churlish to be sidetracked with a debate about portobellos village credentias. Since when did churlish stop us?

I know I said it but I dont consider Portobello a village, its a suburb. Nor do I think its full of idiots, we undoubtedly have some but its probably consistent with other communities of our size. Not sure about witch hunts either, surely theres no need? Porty's witches don't practice their craft in secret , do they?

What exaclty are you on about?

Why are you trying to turn a positive thread into a neagtive one?

Are you implying I have called anyone on here a witch or an idiot? Becasue I haven't. Not sure where your negativity against me is coming from. Please explain.

Sorry Mak. My mistake, it's Porty that has a penchant for multiple smileys. I wasn't trying to turn it into a negative thread. I think that the achievements of the water polo team is fantastic and I hope that they get more praise and publicity than this forum provides, although if it hadn't been for Porty's post we would probably have never heard about it until the Porty Reporter. I'm assuming it will be on the front page of the next issue, or page 3 would be good too.

Cheers Porty. I've already exceeded my apology quota for the day, you'll have to wait for my next faux pas (I'm sure it will be along shortly). Think I must be getting a bit antsy with the lack of movement on the other front.

Just saw Wangi's post. RAGING. I don't know how to get those little buggers onto my post. It was all just jealousy on my part from the off.

There'll be no stopping me now. Please insert =P~ x infinity to water polo team photo. I don't want my perving to in any way detract from the amount of hard work and dedication that they must have put in to achieve their success. They are to be applauded. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
