Food waste recycling - is yours being collected?

Post by wangi » 31 Jan 2012, 21:29

I'm having a frustrating experience with the food waste recycling... Given the low level of waste food we have I fill up the bin and only put it out once it is full. For the last three weeks it has been out for collection but never collected. I had similar in the past that was only resolved by contacting the council department and making them aware of the issue...

...So do you also have problems, or is it working for you?

Gave up after three weeks. Only collected once. Mailed the Council asking why, giving my address. Got a stock reply asking me for 'full details including your address'... #fail

We were part of the pilot scheme and put out our container every week. It has always been collected so no problem here. Do many others in your street take part? Wonder if they are just not seeing many and missing yours? Most folk on our street seem to take part.

I take mine to the big communal bin, they're next to the cans, cardboard/paper recycling bins. I've found them really useful rather than waiting on collection
I too found that some weeks there was very little to recycle in food waste, but leaving it made it a bit smelly.
Then again if I've been making soups there's a lot of peel so I wrap it in newspaper and toddle down the road.

We've always put our veg waste onto the compost heap at the allotment and there's never any meat left over anyway so we've never used ours. Haven't seen any of the neighbours putting theirs out either.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I have noticed that they empty them by opening them, and taking the bags out. They don't tip the bins into the van. So maybe if your bin is just full of stuff not in bags, they're ignoring it.

No, not really - well not any more. Chicken and egg, isn't it. I'm sure a few have got frustrated like me and stopped.

It's rammed full of the green - not plastic - bags, so won't be that - it's simply not being touched.

Thanks for the responses, just wanted an idea before getting in touch with council again.

Looks like the food waste bins in Regent St/Straiton Place been emptied today.

I notice no one in our stair puts them out anymore, there were only 3 of us to begin with ( out of 10 flats )
I suspect like us they have found the bigger bin a bit smelly as the bin was in a nice warm flat so a weeks worth of food waste clumped together was fermenting and rotting away in the house as we dont have an outside space for the bigger bin
Luckily there's a communal bin near foot of Bath Street

It'll be getting re-named 'Bin Street' at this rate - more blinkin communal bins per m2 between no 42 and the Espe than anywhere else in this city.
