How many years has it been since the hamburger stand disappear? Anita , who ran the place with her sister, turned 80 a couple of weeks ago.

Where was there a hamburger stand? I don't remember that?

it was at the foot of Bellfield Street, I thought that's what you were referring to.I believe it was owned by the then Sands Hotel, which is now flats. I seem to recall that it was a bit more than a hamburger stand, hamburger hut. It may have had seating, can anyone recall? I'd say it stood until the mid 80's.

Ah. Know what you're talking about now. Think it may have been standing but unused when I moved back to Porty in '87.
I was meaning the Sands Hotel; couldn't remember the name. Never the best bar on the Prom, but you could do a pub crawl from one end to the other, back in the day!

lets do nostalgia. Working from the Joppa end a prom pubcrawl back in the day. Temple Hall Hotel, Hammy Lodge, Sands Hotel, Clifton Hotel, Seabeach Hotel, (Granny's Attic?),Marine Bar, Flying Dutchman- was that it?
The Sands was great on a Sunday, they had jazz.

I remember the hut quite well as I was a regular visitor to the baths in my young days - you used to get in for half price because you were a member of the BB's. There was definitely seating in the hut and Anita, whom Porty mentions above, is a truly outstanding cook. Her chicken Milanese is to die for.

Porty there was also the Battery Bar and the pub that used to be the toilets at foot of Kings Road
Was the Sands not divided into 2 pubs at one time? One the Sands one the Prom Bar?
Granny's attic was above the Marine Bar where the Beach House is now for those that don't remember/know

Where was the battery bar,the Tides Inn?
The bar in the old toilets at kings road was relatively new, maybe 83-84? I remember the guy bought the building for £10k.
Did Tam Hepburn have red hair?
The Prom Bar and Sands Hotel bar did coexist for a while, after the Sands was sub-divided, I think.
But depending on when the Pub Crawl took place neither the Prom Bar or the Toilets bar would have been there. I once organised a "treasure hunt" pub crawl in Porty for someones 40th, it was brilliant, realy funny.

The Battery Bar was right at the bottom of Kings Road on the corner. It was the Battery for many, many years but then became theTides Inn.

Beyond the Tides Inn (going west... young man?) there was another place, right at the end of the Prom. Was it The Beachcomber? It and The Temple Hall were our favourites, the rest were just staging points!

The toilets pub was also called Bikinis at one time - my favourite combo - a bikini/pub...

Was the toilets pub not called Surfers at one time?
I can't remember if Beachcomber was one of the names of the Espy. I mind it being The Flying Dutchman and Ruthvens and was there not something about the Pier in the name at one time?

Yeah Pier definitely featured. I had some doubt about Beachcomber being Espy but now Epykat has cleared up the B in the toilets bar being Bikinis, I'm sure. And Surfers is correct, that's what it was called the night of the treasure hunt. The Hammy had two bars one was called Viking Lounge and I think the Seabeach may also have had two bars?

No.He did have a fiery nature,though!
Honorable mention to the SeaHaven...not on the prom as such, but a vital component in any pub crawl.

Fiery nature-could well be the same guy. The one I'm thinking of, had lost most of his hair by about age 30.

Oh how that takes me back !!! worked part-time over the years in a few of the places mentioned . The Sands . Ricky Valvona the owner was Anitas brother. Loved the jazz nights, hard work though. Worked in the Hammy when it was owned by Jim Bell who also owned a pub on Cockburn Street, Jim's Inn. It was inhabited by all the Scotsman/ News staff. Also did time in the Seahaven. Going slightly off course but remember the baked tattie shop , Spud-u-like . Loved working there . Would take home leftover bakies and they went in our dogs dinner. They would be behind the front door waiting for me.Happy days wot !!
whatever, am i bovvered

Awww the Spud U Like < sigh>
We ate there a lot when we first moved in, the days before we had a working cooker, and the St Andrews before it was a restaurant, it was more a caff way back then
If we're giving pubs an honorable mention then we should include the Bluebell

The Marine Bar, it went from a pub to a part of the arcade that housed pool tables to The Beach House.

The Royal Hotel at the top of Bath St is long gone as is the Railwaymen's Club that was in Bath St
Anyone else remember the bakers that used to be next to the Marine? Lovely hot rolls on a Sunday morning
And Mr Rudge's grocery shop on the corner of Straiton Place/Bath St. Had a lovely cat called Blacky that used to sit on the piles of kindling
Mrs Webber's sweetie shop and Mrs Pelosi's chippy nr foot of Bath St
County chippy in Bath St

I remember the bakers. My Mum used to send me down (no.12) to get hot rolls on a Sunday and I had to hand half a dozen into my Nana (no.43) and my Uncle George (no.46) - by the time I got back up the road the hot middles had usually gone

My Nan was in no 44, the top bit was her flat, underneath was the sub aqua club
Before that she was in Melville (Bellfield ) St which is where my mum grew up

Maybe my Aunty and Uncle were no.42 then...they were the middle flat right next door to the sub aqua club, an Oriental (Thai maybe?) lady lived in the basement.

The baker at the foot of bath street was called Robertsons. The queue on a Sunday used to be massive as people came from all over to get their morning rolls.
Mrs Webber, the sweetie shop was legend. Her son used to run the ice cream stall that was situated in what is now a vacant space on the Prom in front of the Bath Street Lane houses.
There was even a Ladbrokes at the foot of Bath Street!

I'm sure there's been a few schemes hatched in and around Porty
