Edinburgh Big Beach Busk (was: Beach Buskers?)

Post by Lambie » 30 Jun 2010, 20:56

Anyone know why there are so few buskers on Porty Prom? That accordion guy is great but he's not been about for ages.

This guy...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WM7MIx_zb4

If I had any musical abilities at all I'd be down there with my uke all the time.

Actually, are there any patient ukelele teachers in Porty?

I want to learn to play the bagpipes, if anyone round here is a teacher. I don't suppose there's anyone very closeby or I'd have heard them...

We have a drummer nearby. He'd not be too bad but for the minor details that he has no sense of rythym and two years of practice later still can't really drum :D

In Bath St we had a double bass player upstairs, which was a treat. I loved sitting on the windowsill to hear her practice!

I reckon there's plenty of musicians but there's still no buskers. Accordion guy's not been down here for ages.

With a bit of luck August will bring them all down to the beach, even if just for their lunchbreaks. There were some good brief beachy buskers last festival time.

The Edinburgh Big Beach Busk

Post by Lambie » 05 Jul 2010, 11:14

I'm going to invite some friends down to busk in Porty. If they invite their friends and friends of friends and if we can get 80 buskers down to the Prom AND if they were to spread out at 20 meter intervals we'd have an uninterrupted mile (ish) of beach busking.

28th of August at noon. That's slap bang in the middle of the Edinburgh Festival so there should be some good street performers kicking about. Add them to our already very musical Porty talent pool and you've got an afternoon of top quality beach entertainment.

Who's in?

Cheers Bob,

tell your friends and invite folk down. Stock up on BBQ coals and look out your cool box. This is going to be a great afternoon on the prom.

I'm up for it. Well, the eating and drinking bit at least. I can't play or sing a single note, but my 14 yr old son plays guitar. I'll also spread the news to his guitar teacher, who lives with his young family in Portobello.

I'm in, if I'm not completely broken by then - being the last weekend of the Fringe 'n all :D

Cacophony? Noo, that's carefully played polyphonic disharmonics that is.

Thanks Porty, I think "Organise" might be to strong a word. I invited a few mates, they invited a few mates, I mentioned it on a couple of forums etc, etc. If everyone does the same this could be a great big fun day on the prom.

Bold as brass bid to string buskers a mile along prom
By GEMMA FRASER
A CAMPAIGN has been launched to create a "mile of buskers" along Portobello promenade.
Local residents say the prom is "strangely bereft" of buskers and other street performers and are appealing to musicians and performers to change that.

A group of local residents have banded together to arrange the Big Beach Busk which will take place on August 28.

Organisers say that if they get 80 buskers on the day and they are placed at 20-metre intervals, then visitors to the beach will be entertained from one end of the prom to the next.

Mime artists, jugglers, human statues and other street performers are also being encouraged to take part in the event.

A Facebook group set up to promote the Big Beach Busk has already attracted more than 280 members.

Elk- the council will have a database of street artists of all kinds, who apply for licences from time to time. Ask them to flag the event via email, they may do it.

big beach busk

Post by Mark Cameron » 17 Jul 2010, 14:27

This is a great idea. Can you send me the flyer an I'll stick it up on the noticeboards in my work and maybe even on our intranet to see if it can drum up a bit of interest. Maybe if others did the same we could really get the crowds down that day.

Have you contacted the fringe organisers as they may be willing to pass on info. to the performers or even help promote it with tourists to send them our way. Also the tourist office might be willing to spread the message too?

I'd be happy to help if I could.

Mark

I notice that you are listed among the performers wangi. Do you have a hidden talent of which we were previously unaware?

Not that I'm aware of - I was locked in the cupboard during music lessons at school... No, I'll be down because I created the event on fb.

Cheers Mark, we need everyone to get involved and spread the word. Putting posters and flyers up on noticeboards at work and using intranet/work networks is great. Two weeks before it'd be great if everyone texted, emailed and called all the local radio and press.

Everyone will have unique ways that they can publicise the BBB. It's just a case of actually doing it.

You can grab images large enough to print from the Facebook group pages.

Not me. However, there is at least one person using TP that knows one of their Mothers In Law's: Margo MacDonald

You could try contacting Grant Stott on facebook, he definitely knows them.
