Low Tide Mystery Objects

Post by Poppy » 13 Sep 2006, 20:48

Granty, seeing you online just now reminded me to ask if you or any other kayakers managed to get up close to the 'things' uncovered over the weekend by the really low tide. Three lumps, flat looking, covered in brown seaweed - as far out as the Golden Ball opposite the Baths??????

Sorry, I didn't get in my kayak to investigate, but saw them as well. I'll take my investigative duties more seriously next time.

Bad girl! I can't be expected to ALL the investigation round here!! :P

Only problem is...when will the tide next be so low as it was caused by lunar eclipse???

There have been a lot more dead fish washed up early morning - in particular a HUGE and nasty looking bloated number ( as opposed to a bloater ! ) quite high on the beach, and some wee flat boys actually in the burn. Don't remember seeing this before, even after big storms, and I've lived here since 1991... any ideas?

Promqueen, I think it might well be the lunar eclipse causing really low tides (not much sign of very high ones here at least!?) and thereby scouring up unusual live and dead things?

Any astronomers or oceanographers out there???

re low tide objects

Think the things seen out from Porty Baths might be the remains of the old salt water intake pipe to the Baths. There was a settling tank up the wee lane behind the baths, next to where their laundry was.I still remember when the Baths were salt water , nippy on any cuts. My time does fly!

low tides

According to a local amateur astronomer it was the equinox and phases of the moon giving the low tides.

Think I might be wrong. We had a low tide yesterday so I toddled down to have a look. The salt water intake pipe seems to stop half way down the beach (seemed futher away when I was wee) and has a big yellow post thingy. There's a line of old wood posts leading to the sea, possibly an old breakwater, so I'm wondering if the bit at the golden balls is the end of the old breakwater. Even though it was a sunny morning didn't fancy paddling out to have a look.
Perhaps it's really a sleeping dragon- it shouldn't be disturbed. We like our snooze time!

Ps dont mind "Soupy" sure I've been called worse.

Hi SoupyD (that better Ms Foxy? :P )

I think your original idea was pretty close - they can't have been the old groyne as not in line and too big anyway. They looked man-made even though covered in seaweed so were probably something to do with the Baths at some point. Next time the tides that low we should get together and bravely paddle out for a neb?!

I've been trying to figure out when the next really low tides will be. Don't think it'll be at the next full moon. Probably in the spring. Should give me time to dig out wellies or brave a paddle.

Whats the datest object anyone has found washed up? Think ours would be a French traffic cone ( eldest Clanger still hasn't forgiven me for putting it in the bin during a clear out )

Yes I did mean daftest ( my fingers cant spell ) Think Wangi wins on all counts. Wonder where the rest of the hippo went. Clanger no 3 worrying it was a marathon runner and the rest of him has been eaten by the Firth of Forth monster.

Clangers can be clingy when young so could be classed as clingers. I call the offspring Clangers as their speech is mostly unintellegble and they seem to be a different species ( especially when in their teens )

We did have a harbour porpoise stranded in the early 1980s on the beach between Bath St and Bellfield St.

Forgot- until forcebly reminded, last year ,youngest Clanger found a slightly wounded frog on the beach. Was it picked up in local pond by a gull then dropped? Not quite in Wangi's league but I do wonder how a freshwater amphibian ended down at the waterline. We let it recover and then took it along to the nature park at Seafield.

Should be a photo of it in our sink here but cant figure out how to post it.

Check out here, Soupy.

I read that as you thought the picture was in the sink, not that it was a pic of the frog in the sink...

Thank you.
Did think pic was in the sink as well as frog
Will follow the link when I've a Clanger to guide me.
There is a picture of a slightly chewed frog in my pc somewhere, it is sitting in our sink having been brought up from the beach.
I'm new to this lark. Took me 5 days to get stuff onto an mp3 player. What fun now though.

Next suitably low tide I'm donning the wellies or sending Mr Soupy out in his waders to check what the objects are. Too far across to have been part of the pier.
