That's good news on the bus livery front. The brown tourist signage is a different matter. I've just spoken to Tom Mochan and he doesn't think that signage on Portobello High Street would be appropriate. Having listened to his reasons, I'm inclined to agree. But I don't think we should get too hung up on this. The underlying issue is getting the Council, VisitScotland etc to promote Portobello as a tourist destination and signage is just one small aspect of this.

Having said that, I only discovered yesterday that the signs welcoming people to Portobello, Edinburgh's seaside at the King's Road junction are no longer there. Apparently, they were removed when the work to replace the roundabout was under way and have not since been replaced. So that's something we should be chasing up.

What were Tom's reasons? Did they include parking? On a sunny day I can't park anywhere within five minutes of my flat. I've been noticing that the big bowling and leisure centre has a huge car park that's almost always empty. Would it make good beach parking?

If the King's Road 'Edinburgh's Seaside" sign's gone it might be an opportunity to have it replaced with something a bit more inspiring. This would be a good use of the knowledge base created by Big Things on the Beach. A big sculptural piece maybe. Something that reminds people of Portobello's tourist heritage.

Yes, he doesn't want to direct motorists down any of the side streets as parking is already at a premium. If we are directing them anywhere, it should be to the car park at Bridge Street, where there are spaces for 65 cars.

He also pointed out that we already had the finger sign-posts directing pedestrians to the beach. I think people will find the beach OK, it's a question of how we get them to Portobello in the first place.

Here's one idea. There are currently 8 reviews of Portobello beach on Tripadvisor. Let's add a few, shall we?

On the subject of car parking and signage ........an additional sign directing motorists to Bridge Street car park is to be put up within the next 8 weeks.

Did you discuss a brown sign pointing people in the direction of Portobello and the beach from say the city centre or London Road?

We did. He seemed to think that a sign from the city centre was a non-starter. We didn't discuss London Road. I think I had given up on the whole idea by then but maybe it's worth pursuing?

If anyone's going to Barcelona any time soon it'd be great to have some photos of their city beach signs.

Tripadvisor currently rates Portobello beach as 26th out of 184 attractions in Edinburgh. It would only take a few more favourable reviews to push it up the rankings. I use Tripadvisor whenever I am going anywhere on holiday and millions of other people worldwide do too, so it's a worthwhile exercise. And we could do with some photos up there.

Scott Manion is pursuing the matter of replacing the signs at the Kings Road junction that have gone missing. His direct number is 469 3350. It's taking a while because they don't have the template and were going to have to make up new signs from scratch, though I've passed on some information that may help him to find the original design artwork.

It's definitely worth while. I've put up a Portobello Beach review on Trip Advisor and I've emailed everyone that's been to visit us since we moved in and asked them to do the same. Let's get the beach up to number one.

The identical sign at the Joppa end is still there, which you see as you enter from Musselburgh. 8)

Donald Huggan's posted this on the Big Busk Facebook page

I think it's a strong idea for an update to the sign.[/url]

I would suggest that the word 'may' is probably superfluous.

CEC have now ordered two new replacement signs.

Did the whole "Bus to the Beach" thing die a death? It seemed a great idea but all I see on the 26 is Bus to the Zoo!!

Sorry if I've missed any update on this.

Embarrassed to say that this was mentioned at the last CC meeting, but my recall isn't that reliable. I think someone said that the number 26 was remaining as 'The Bus to the Zoo', but that the number 15 would be our 'Bus to the Beach'. Think this is due to happen with the next change of bus livery, which will be happening over the next few months. Paul or Sean, can you remember what was said exactly?

What I took away from the discussion was that on the next set of new buses for the 26 one side would have zoo, the other beach. Paul suggested 15, but nothing in the pipeline there I think.
