Portobello Premiere of The Railway Man
Portobello Open Door (POD) started screening films once a month earlier this year at the Wash House Community Centre in Adelphi Grove. We are delighted to announce that we have been given special permission from the Film company Lionsgate to screen the film, The Railway Man in Portobello, shortly after it's UK release on Jan 1st, 2014.
The film starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, is based on the life of Eric Lomax who was born and grew up in Portobello. During World War II, he, as a British officer, was captured by the Japanese in Singapore and sent to a POW camp, where he was forced to work on the Thai-Burma Railway. During his time in the camp, Lomax and his fellow POW's were severely tortured by his captors. Years later, and still suffering the psychological trauma of his wartime experiences, Lomax, with the help of his second wife Patti, and best friend, decides to find and confront one of his captors. Lomax returns to the scene of his torture and manages to track down a Japanese officer from the prison camp, in an attempt to let go of a lifetime of bitterness and hate.
The Portobello Premiere of the The Railway Man will take place on Saturday January 11th at the Wash House Community Centre. We are very fortunate that Eric Lomax's daughter has accepted an invitation to join us. We expect demand for tickets to be very high for this event, especially with a capacity of only 100, so please follow us on Facebook or check our website (http://www.the-pod.org) to keep up to date with ticketing information.

Re: The Railway Man - Portobello Movie Premiere
Only a couple of days to go before our Portobello Premiere of "The Railway Man" on Saturday Jan 11th. Interest in this event has been amazing, we are only sorry that we can't accommodate more people. Our permission to show the film was only granted for a single screening.To all those who have tickets, we plan to keep our Facebook page (Portobello Open Door) with information about the event.
As it's a Premiere we have managed to get a Red Carpet for the evening! There will be an opportunity to get your picture taken on the carpet and these will be posted on our website.
As well as having a Red Carpet it's also traditional to dress up for a Premiere, so we'd like to encourage you to put your (winter) glad rags on. There is however no pressure to do so, we just think it will add something to the evening. A bar will be available as people arrive until the start of the film. this will be very reasonably priced.
We are delighted that Eric Lomax's daughter, Charmaine, will be our guest of honour on the night. She is happy to try and answer any questions you may have after the film.
To help you plan your evening, we thought you'd like to know the rough schedule;
Doors will open at 6.45pm, we would appreciate if everyone is at the venue by 7.10pm,
Doors will close at 7.25pm.
The film is expected to finish around 9.30pm. followed by the Q&A until approx 10pm when the event will end.
