My alter ego Beadybird and my alter-alter ego The Silver Starling (no wonder I'm confused!) are both now available to buy from the new Cherry Pie Design shop (formerly La Vie En Rose) on the High Street. Beadybird is selling handmade, unique, one of a kind, couldn't make another if you tried brooches and pendants which are made using shells, driftwood, seaglass and pottery which has mainly washed up on Portobello beach (I confess, the odd bit of Paua shell which is definitely NOT from these shores has been used also - think Maori meets Mhairi  ) as well as 100% pure wool needlefelted bear brooches, fridge magnets and keyrings. The Silver Starling specialises in handmade 99.9% pure silver jewellery (hallmarked by the Edinburgh Assay Office). Most pieces are one of a kind and I'm delighted to customise or create on request. Please check out http://www.beadybird.com for further details and support local artists, jewellers and crafters!
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I just noticed it in a job ad; not sure where the shop will be.

EDIT: Although I imagine the old Ford's shop would be a good bet.

Never heard of them. Why are bakers in the UK so crap? Can't we have a real boulangerie or perhaps a nice patisserie instead of more steak bakes and cup cakes?

Supply and Demand I'm afraid.

The vast majority of punters in Porty high street greasy steak bakes, scotch pies and filled rolls.
It's lunch time fast food really, not items that you'd buy and take home.

I guess 9-5 opening precludes that kind of continental style high street shopping, shame really.

Was that the one where you could have your palm read or get a taxi? I think I opted for a taxi the last time :-D

I have a phobia of hairdressers. Let a stranger stand behind me waving sharpened pieces of metal at my head?! At least you can hear a chainsaw.

Is the existing tattoo shop re-locating or do we now have two tattoo shops in Portobello? What is the maximum ratio of flabby white flesh to tattoo shop in terms of commercial viability?

We will have TWO tattoo parlours in Porty. The existing tatto shop owner was not best pleased and came rampaging into the Mortgage people to see if the 'rumours' he had heard about a competitor opening up were true. I can confirm they are. 8)

Something like Patisserie Jacob perhaps? Already a big hit in Gorgie and at the Portobello Market, they would do really well here. The old Post Office/Klaze shop would be an ideal site. Anyone for cake?

The laundrette had a sign outside saying it was open again.
Next to Mike's tackle there's a hat shop.

Seems to be a launderette, also had a sign for dry cleaning

I echo Sandra's comment about the nice staff in Acorn Pet's

I wonder how a hat shop will do down here

Went into what used to be Wysteria Lane and it is a bric-a-brac shop. Had a sign up last week advertising hat hire, didn't see any mention of hire today.

It is sad and acorn pets was one of the businesses that said their takings suffered on Market day. The member of staff I spoke with stopped short of saying they would like the market stopped. Doesn'tread like the problem was only on Market days.

There's a new shop opened on Brighton Place where Smells n Spells used to be, called something like Auntie's Attic. I haven't been in yet, but it's got a collection of memorabilia and retro items in the window. Looks interesting!

So is the old tile showroom on Joppa Rd going to be some sort of music shop? Pianos seem to be breeding...

Looks like Urban Igloo's shop on the High St is to close:
http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?s ... 6930265014
To my lovely customers,
My lease is coming up for review and I have decided not to renew it but instead to move Urban Igloo in another direction. Meanwhile make the most of Urban Igloo on Porty high street as I will be having a big clearout over the next few weeks.
Thanks to all of you who have supported the high street store, I’ll keep you posted of developments in due course on my website.

I am sitting in my shop which has occupancy costs in excess of £20,000 per annum watching leafleters outside diverting everyone away from the High Street to the Organic Market. Somehow it just does not feel right.
