I know this may sound like a daft question, but will the kids get to sail on the water?

No, that would be assail Porty. Although I'm sure Jonathan could arrange a Viking funeral for you if that's what you want?

Yes - from the get go. No two hour preamble in a classroom if that's what you mean.

Next question...What type of boats will the kids be sailing? Sorry, but I'm not up on my sail-boats and will probably tell folk the wrong one! I'm promoting this round my kayaking mob and I just KNOW someone'll ask

Hi Granty

The boats are the Topper Taz.

Here is the web site address http://sailporty.org.uk/?cat=2.

This is the RYA SITC site address which spells it all out: http://www.ryascotland.org.uk/sailingin ... esitc.aspx

Tell them to get a move on as we have only got 16 of the original 98 places left.

If we get more applicants than places we will ask the RYA if they can do a third weekend.

Yes - with the fence in place we can start operating as a club. If you are interested in joining as a Founder Member, come along to the yard between 1 and 2pm any day over the next three weekends, 23rd / 24th, 30/31 and 6/7 June. when we will be having a BBQ for the 144 children doing the Sailing Taster Session and their parents - and inviting people to join.

Top marks to everyone for all the effort involved in getting the Porty Sailing Club underway. The buzz around the boat park site and the positive level of interest from passer's by was really fantastic. To see all the kids out on the water having the time of their lives made me think it's the start of great things to come and a superb resource on our doorstep.

My son is booked in for tomorrow afternoon's lesson. We're all looking forward to it and to the BBQ. We'll definitely be signing up as founder members.

Thanks Granty. It seems llike everyone had a good time. 18 founder members booked too which is a great start. The sun comes out tomorrow (there is a song in there somewhere) so it will be even better!

I have just uploaded a short film of Sunday afternoon's session to YouTube. My original choice of Rod Stewart's 'Sailing' as background music has been rejected as a blatant infringement of copyright so I'm looking for 4m 18 secs or so of original music on a nautical theme if anyone can help out.

How about a medley of sea shanties? I'll leave it with you.

And while they battled the briny, their caring parents were sitting on the prom wall, laughing heartedly at the boat, that was heading determinedly for Fife , before the inevitable capsize.
That'll be the last time Emily will volunteer to share a boat with Matthew! Mind you, she obviously has an adventurous spirit, as according to Matthew, when they capsized she just giggled. They also continued to sail for quite a bit afterwards despite being frozen to the core, which is more than I could have managed; he was still cold two hours later despite a hot shower and a large hot chocolate!

Naturally, he's keen to do it all again. :D
ps
Where's the option to watch in HQ again , Bob?

Scary, isn't it? :( He now wears size 12 trainers and he's only turned 13. Mind you, they probably helped him tread water well and he could probably use them as a rudder if necessary

I was sorry to have missed Sunday's sunnier sailing club day - but I have two flat tyres and am grounded till they inflate!

Love the film Bob! I've been sorting all my photos from Saturday, to the tune of the Blue Peter theme :-)

There should be a little button that says 'HQ'. Just press it. The downside is that you are then trying to download a much bigger file so not recommended for older machines or slower connections. I'll stick a copy of the original on a disk for you.

I should point out that my footage of the actual 'sailing' bit was somewhat restricted by being stuck on the beach. Next time I will try and blag a berth on one of the rescue boats for some more dramatic action - like our children capsizing for example.

Emily is up for more too, but I think you're right - she is a girl who is going to captain her own ship.

Bob - its got to be 'We sail the ocean blue, and our saucy ship's a beauty' from HMS Pinafore

Well done Jonathan - it was fantastic to watch and brought a whole new dimension to the beach and the prom. I love the outdoor seating at the Beach House as well, it looks great.

Just a thought Jonathan. You have remembered that the Edinburgh Marathon is on this Sunday and about 14 thousand runners will be making their way along the Prom in the morning? Just that I remembered the boats and sails being manoeuvred across the prom last weekend..... :?

Marathon

Post by Jonathan Bendit » 29 May 2009, 21:41

Thanks - we are aware - we think the elite runners will be through between 9 -9.15 so the RYA plan to have boats on the beach well before then. Kids willl just have to dodge the runners as they come through.
