low Brow Hi Fi

Say for instance that you had a hifi set of bits that hadn't been separated for years and now they are and you want to put them back together...

you would have to answer tricky questions like:

I know you connect the L channel to the Left speaker, but does the left speaker go on the left as you look at it or as it looks at you? And does it matter?

Does anyone know?

Occam's Razor states that one should not make more assumptions than necessary. This would point to the left speaker going on your left.

My soundcard has a 5.1 test feature which puts a voice through each channel to speak which one it is respectively, and left front and rear do indeed come out on my left.

Aye, left is on your left! Or just wing it together and then check that when you flit the balance to full left you hear it out your left ;)

It's amazing what the trauma of bleading radiators can do to you! :)

Oh, I now know that half the radiators in the house have metric keys, and the others imperial... But still to work out what I bought!

and then, when you get everything eventually in its final place you wonder - is the red terminal or the black terminal the negative one? The speaker cable says connect the inner cores to the negative terminals, but theres no indication of which ones they are...

As far as I know the red is positive and the black negative, then again, I may always have been consistently wrong for the last 20 years !
If you can keep your head when all around are losing theirs, it probably means you've underestimated the gravity of the situation.

thanks, Homer - I'll just change them all over again one night when mrs m is stuck somewhere else with a small child and unable to 'comment' on my level of knowledge and/or foolishness in the cabling field...
