Yeh, I agree with this one. I welcome the ban but wonder how it will be administered.

Wondered if we could have a POL poll on this one - those for and against? There have been so many recent statistical quotes that don't seem quite accurate being bantered about - like the one I heard on the radio this morning that 'Around 70% of Scots oppose the ban'

Ontario has had it banned in Pubs and food establishments (public places) for a while now... next is banning smoking in cars which should be in the next month or two (going through the vote now) ......then it will be you will pay through the roof for house insurance if your a smoker, to stop you smoking in your own home..... its going overboard taking the smokers right away in their own home.... and this is coming from a non smoker

This will not be enforced by the Police. The Scottish Exec do not have devolved powers to change the Health and Safety at Work Act (the way they it did in Ireland). So they are tackling it under a Public Health issue where they do have powers. It will be monitored by Environmental Enforcers rather like he way the parking meanies work.

What I don't understand is why can't they say "no smoking in pubs etc from next January" - why do we have to wait until 2006??? Are they hoping the smokers will have had time to give it up then there'll be less opposition?

I think thats the deadline for when it has to be done but the venue can choose to inforce it before then if they wish.

Its mainly because the decision on the venue for the 2012 Olympics will not be taken until July 2005.

Good - apart for the pubs (Irish pubs have had a serious loss in takings since their ban) - I'll still visit mine though.

Just seems stupid for the reasons given for the ban. Ban it because it's digusting, smells, hurts the smokers health and is addictive. Don't bring in unproven 'science' about passive smoking - there has never been a non-sponsered report that has proven a 100% link despite what half the parliment has been shouting about for the last x months.

Seems to me they were trying to push it at non-smokers to make them against it and bolster public opinion.
