Kings Road Roundabout

Hi

I have just noticed that there appears to have been yet another accident at Kings road roundabout! thankfully no one else was killed.

Two sections of the protection Barrier between the R/A and Baileyfield Road have been 'taken out' still parts of vehicle lights etc. kicking around.
The Council have inserted two roped together barriers! which are inadequate! although in saying this 'the original barrier is inadequate 'and would not halt anything larger than a small car from careering through the fence and onto the pavement

Another incident which was brought to my attention yesterday, was the amount of cars running the red and in yesterday's scenario running the green man with a pensioner crossing at the time. ( Pedestrian Crossing at Kings Road ) The pensioner in question is 77 years old and has recently had a knee replacement. She was visably shaken and I fear she will now loose confidence in venturing out! Obviously we are aware of the incident at Moira Terrace a couple of years back, although there has been talk of a crossing there - nothing has yet materialised, I fear it will be the same scenario again, resulting in nothing being done until a major accident or fatality occurs - if anything but talk about it is ever done!!

The amount of traffic in this area is ever increasing (from one who knows) Would it be out of the realms of possibility for the Council to install some traffic calming measures to slow traffic down in dangerous hot spots?

Incidentally, there is still no road signage in Fishwives Causeway, perhaps the council are waiting for the new owners of the Scottish Power Site (I believe it has now been sold) to pay for all the surrounding signage.

Yes. Bring all the cars to a standstill and they cant crash into one another!

I'm trying to establish whether the roadworks are merely restorative or whether there have been specific safety features introduced. What kind of safety features have been put in ali?

I thought the main point of these works was to install traffic lights which will favour the bus lanes.

I think every set of traffic lights in Edinburgh should have cameras fitted to them which photograph cars going through red lights. There should be a minimum fine of Â£1000 for every offender, payable within 24 hours of notification or the car is confiscated and sold at auction. The initial set-up costs would soon be covered by the fines imposed or the cash made on auctioned cars. Even if this doesn't stop the red light crashers it will make the city a tidy sum in cash and give the sensible road users a laugh when they see the procession of confiscated cars on their way to Shotts. I will be asking the council to begin this purge of irresponsible bampots by installing cameras at the lights which will appear at Kings Road.

What would you do with the 70 Edinburgh buses, which were caught within the last year jumping red lights Tom? Seems a bit mean spirited to just pick on the car drivers.

Impound them too. We'd hardly miss them, given that I find myself these days waiting for about 15 minutes at the bus stop before three 26's arrive - one full and the other two empty

For once I was being completely serious with my cameras idea. It would include all motorised vehicles going through red lights, not just cars. As a regular city cyclist I find traffic light junctions extremely dangerous due to the disregard of red lights by so many drivers. Another thing that really annoys me is grown-ups cycling on pavements and going through pedestrian crossings against the green light (for pedestrians) I would support any move that licenced cycles and made them identifiable. Cars have number plates so why not have the same for bikes.

Think the licensing of cycles might be difficult to enforce.
Look at the wee motorised bikes zooming up and down the Prom with no license and no doubt no insurance, when they're supposed to have by law.
But otherwise I agree with you, Tom.
Would be a money spinner for the council to fine those driving through the red lights or blocking box junctions. Wonder if they'd notice those on mobile phones. Saw a woman driving down Brighton place yesterday , either texting or taking photos with her phone, holding us up at the bridge
