REVIEW – eh15, Jewel and Esk Valley College.

An excellent dining experience that is worth the journey across town

We first dined at the excellent eh15 restaurant and bar two years ago and have also attended a couple of their event evenings in recent months. It’s an excellent concept at Jewel and Esk Valley College - a real live working restaurant for the hospitality and catering students to gain useful experience before setting out to work in professional venues.

Situated on the 3rd floor of ‘The Club’ at the Brunstane college campus, there are wonderful views of Arthur’s Seat and the Edinburgh skyline to be had. Unfortunately for us, this visit afforded us no view due to persistent fog and cloud.

We arrived a little early for our 12pm lunch and witnessed the students (staff) preparing for service, including polishing the front door of the restaurant. My dining partner and I were warmly welcomed by the staff, coats taken and shown to our table.

Previous experience has shown us that this place fills up quickly, even during weekday lunches, so booking is advisable. By 12.30pm, almost all of the 50 seats were full. We were given the menu (three choices or so for each course) and the cost is a very reasonable £9.50 for the full lunch.

There was no question about whether or not we were after dessert - we wanted the full experience. Strawberry Mousse was the choice for my friend, whilst I opted for Steamed Orange Pudding with Orange Sauce. The former was light and fluffy and everything you would expect a mousse to be. The latter was a generous portion of wonderfully moist sponge with bags of flavour, accompanied by the most perfect orange sauce and cream.

Time did not allow us to linger today over coffee, but it was offered with a smile, before we requested our bill. £21 for a lunch of this quality for two people is excellent value and with an ever-changing menu, we’ll certainly return again. And again.

This is a great choice for those that live on this side of town, but well worth the journey if you’re not a local.
