Viewing Portobello through a letterbox...

Post by wangi » 02 Oct 2010, 21:30

... It can be hard thinking of of photos that will work well up there at the top of the page as the Talk Porty header image. And there's a strong bias on the existing ones toward the beach (no apologies!).

So if you think of a scene or close-up detail in Portobello that might work well as a header image please let me know. No promises when it'll get photographed, especially at this time of year! But I'll certainly keep it in mind.

What about the frieze above William Hill in the High St. Every so often there is a little bird building a nest or that has something in it's beak. I'd passed there so often without realising how intricate the carving was.
Think the building was originally a bank.

Or the Figgate Park

The view up To Arthurs seat from the Figgate

The moon rising above East Lothian

I love the one's you've got up there the now btw

Thanks for those ideas. Pretty sure I've photos of most of them kicking around, but would be better to get fresh ones. I've been trying to get Figgate Park for the last three days - each time I've just missed the good light by 10-15 minutes!

How about;

Some action pictures of Portobello rugby club playing

Some action pictures of joppa Utd Football playing

Some 'action' pictures of the bowlers in Lee Crescent and Jessfield

Some of the Portobello High School

Some of the Figgy Burn

One of a 26 bus

Road signs pointing to Portobello

Thanks for those; the 26 can wait until it's got Porty Beach on the side ;)

Lots of great ideas and I'm hoping we can maybe borrow one or two of them for the newly-designed Portobello Online front page as well.

I particularly like the historical map image btw.

It's an excerpt from the 1898 Ordnance 2nd Edition Survey One-inch to the mile map; see: http://maps.nls.uk/os/view/?sid=74488700

The National Library of Scotland now have a lot of interesting historical maps at: http://maps.nls.uk/

The gates to Brighton Park have the name in the ironwork, might make a nice composition in your required format.

Nice. Like the silhouette approach, hadn't even thought of it that way but it works really well.
