Go Wild with your Child

Post by Bob Jefferson » 09 Aug 2010, 15:14

Picked up this booklet recently, which is published by Scottish Natural Heritage. Full of great ideas for places to take your kids in and around Edinburgh. We already knew and had visited most of them but there were one or two we either hadn't explored or had forgotten about.

One of the places we hadn't got round to visiting until yesterday is just a 5 minute drive from Portobello, so close in fact that you could easily walk or cycle there. Anyone know where this photo was taken?

Two words. First word starts with an 'M'. No conferring.

Close. Meadows Yard.
Pocket-sized Local Nature Reserve close to the seaside, but a real escape from nearby busy roads. If you're into exploring, there are many secret spaces to find, formed by overgrown hedge plants that used to surround allotments. Stop and spend some time around the pool, looking for pond insects, or damselflies and dragonflies.
It's pretty wild but with some paths. Lots of nettles and bramble. Pond has pretty much dried up.

The entrance is on Fillyside road, just opposite the civic recycling centre.

Tsk, I'd forgotten it had a name that began with an M.
