Some of the posts on this forum seem to be a bit... well... grumbly.
So on a positive note... what's you favourite thing about Porty (and you're not allowed to say this forum).

Mine is standing on the Beach at the waters edge on a sunny day when the tide is right out. 8)

I've just changed my mind... it the beer garden of that hotel on the prom (on a sunny day).

Think you mean the Bedford. You'd better cast your vote for them then - they're sitting on 'nul points' at the moment. I enjoy a bit of a grumble myself but I think some of the criticism on the board has been a bit unfair and misinformed. So to dispel a couple of myths:

Portobello Community Council is not a Joppa mafia. I can think of half a dozen members just off hand who live in the Rosefield area and in any case it's open to anyone who wants to get involved.

PAS is a group of local volunteers who do an excellent (and largely uncredited) job of monitoring planning applications on behalf of the CC. Again, if you feel strongly about local planning issues or think you can do the job better, you should volunteer your services.

My favourite thing about Porty? A walk along the Prom on a summer's evening. Watching my kids have fun in Rosefield Park. Just strolling along the High Street and saying hi to everyone I know.

Hi

Reagrding you comments on PCC/PAS, regarding criticism and misinformed info. Did you know a huge proportion of west side of Portobello is built on (unconsolidated infilled land) do you know the ramifications of developing on/in/around this these types of foundations!! I certainly do! It dosent take a Rocket Scientist to look over local plans anyone with moderate intelligence can look at proposed plans and give their views on what and what should not be built (with the exception perhaps of Scottish Exec. Planning)

My question to the forum was WHO on the PCC/PAS are diciplined in Geotechnical /Structural/Civil Engineering? we have still had no postings from anyone on these Councils (which I am sure they read) giving their views! Why Not?

We (the Residents who will be affected ) hope that the PCC/PAS do not get involved in the plans for the re-re-development of the Scottish Power Site (re/re is deliberate) we have enough to contend with the Local Planning Department.

You are probably right about changing things and becoming involved in Community Issues it's high time some young blood was introduced to the PCC/PAS perhaps there are a few like minded persons using this Forum that would be interested too?

Note - I did not call them the Joppa Mafia! but it's quite a good title!!

Pperhaps a Poll could be set up??

Joppa Mafia? No, that would be Towerbank PTA you're thinking of (only joking guys!)

I agree that PCC is in need of new 'young blood'. Perhaps we will get enough nominations next time to hold an election - we would all welcome that.

I feel that my £5 annual subs to PAS is money well spent. It's a pity in a way that the minutes of their fortnightly meetings are not in the public domain because people would then have a greater appreciation of the work they do and the selfless dedication involved. Perhaps we can persuade John Stewart to let us do a feaure on PAS for 'Portobello Online' in the future.

Incidentally, this year's PAS AGM takes place on Wed 4 June at 7:30pm in St Marks Church. Guest Speaker Archie Foley, from Portobello Local History Society, will give what promises to be a very interesting illustrated talk on Entertainment in Portobello. We plan a 'What's On' guide for the website in due course to promote this kind of event.

Polls? Any registered user can set up their own poll.

Don't go highjacking my positive thread with grumbles... take them elsewhere... I'm looking at you Bob and Gemini .

There must be something about Porty that you like and want to share.
There's got to be more to Porty than parochial squabbles.

OK, valid point Chris. Admittedly, thread discipline is rather lax in this forum and people do tend to go off at tangents and I'm probably one of the worst offenders. I was increasingly becoming aware of this and for this reason I took up Gemini's issue re. Scottish Power site on a new thread. So, let's try a bit harder to keep on-topic everyone!

Hi,

I like the thinking behind this topic.

Yes sometimes it does you good to stand back and think about what you like about Portobello.

I like watching the children going to and from school, walking along the Prom, laughing and sharing good times with their pals. It evokes happy memories of my own childhood when my sister and two brothers and I set off for Towerbank together, along the Prom meeting our pals on the way.

I like the buildings and the familiar landmarks.

I like the smell of breakfasts cooking on a Sunday morning, whilst I walk to work and the peal of the church bells.

I love watching the gardens in my street come into the bloom and the scents of summertime.

Portobello is a good place to live.

Positive about Porty

That looks like a good idea for a t-shirt!

I just joined the On-line community, but I've lived at the bottom of Bath Street for eight years, and a year in Joppa before that. What I loved about this place at first was the beach and the amazing views - I come from a coastal area, and never really feel at home inland! - but then I also found out how much of a community Porty was, and I feel at home here.

My favourite things about Portobello include:The view on a sunny day from the bench at the east end of Figgate park looking over the pond towards Arthur's seat,The old brick kilns next to the fun park,The view of Portobello from the top of Arthur's seat[there you get a great perspective of area and the Forth.]
The historic houses in the area and architecture on some of the buildings in the high Street,eg Gargoyles on the old Clydesdale bank building,Sun Dial on building near Susan Deacon's office and lastly but not least the superb Portobello Baths facility.

I could go on................
Kevin.

Hello, Porty People, good thread.
I couldn't see an Introductions thread and I hate to barge straight onto a message board unnanounced...so - hello all
I will mostly be lurking but let me add my favourite things about Edinburgh's Seaside:

walking on the beach at low tide
the cormorants drying their wings
going to the hardware store and finding they have exactly what you need
nachos at the Blue Bean
my lovely neighbours
kids biking/rollerblading/skateboarding to school on the Prom
being able to buy Ecover
almond croissants from the Deli
the big Gothic houses on the front

After a hard day at work, getting off the bus at King's Road instead of Bath Street and walking home along the Prom.

Portobello is THE place to live.
We have sea and sand and scotmid's own sangria.
A walk on the prom with a drippy Mr Whippy and then a caffe Latte with someone you meet on the way.
Living in a City but knowing most of the people you pass in the street.
Taking the kids paddling or having the whole prom to let them learn to ride their bike.
Rock on Porty!

It's taken me a while to settle here but now that i really do feel part of the Porty community, there are so many things i love about living here. Being able to head down to the beach in all weathers and just watch the sea in its many moods has to be pretty high up there on the list, but I love the sense of community and the facilities we have. We have excellent schools, lots of activities, classes etc for both kids and adults, good cafes, Kitchener's, lots of play parks, the endless entertainment provided by having a beach on (well, almost) the doorstep. I love that from my house it is no more than a ten minute walk to the library; the swimming pool; school; the post office depot; the town hall; the police station; scotmid; the local shops; the beach; the park; the community centre; the indoor bowls place... I love that we were invited to join a babysitting circle so that we now get breaks from the kids and have met a whole set of new friends. I love that when our neighbours ordered too much turf for their front garden they gave some to our whole street. I love that we have our own forum to find out what's going on and if necessary complain about it! I love that i was able to learn to bellydance here because there's even an excellent creche at the pool. I particularly love that at the Big Beach Bash when i was there in my bellydancing costume, listening to the music, a stranger came up to me and asked me to tango on the beach with him in the sunshine. I love walking along the High Street and seeing so many people i know. I love Portobello. :D

Since nobody's said anything nice about Porty for a while I thought I would!!
I love the way that I have the choice to either go down the street and I'm at the beach, or up the street and I'm at the Figgate Park (dog gets really confused!). I like walking along the High Street on a Saturday afternoon and it taking me 2 hours instead of 20 minutes because of all the people I meet. I LOVE Woodwares! I think the buildings from Bellfield Street to the Rockville are fab. I love the view from my attic windows (left and right are all the roofs and chimneys and lights from peoples' windows and straight on is the sea and Fife). I even (but only very marginally) like listening to the seagulls sitting on my chimney pot making that horrendous noise!! (am I allowed just one grumble? - good. Then I HATE The Old Parish Church's bells on a Sunday - they are so totally tuneless!! :D )

Homer, myself and our son and heir went out for some fresh air today and as a change from Portobello decided to head for the slightly posher alternative and the Cramond/Silverknowes promenade.
It was pretty busy despite the rain (and the distinct lack of any amusement arcades ) but the most noticeable feature was the fact that it lies right on the flight path to the airport and every 2 mins - yes, we timed them! - a plane flew low overhead.
So folks, the moral of this story is appreciate Portobello prom and be glad you don't live in noisy Barnton or Cramond.

Nice to see this thread get its annual airing. Seriously, I like to see old threads being resurrected. PoP was making a bit of a habit of this recently and there are undoubtedly lots of interesting discussions in the archives.

Cramond - I used to work behind the bar briefly in the Cramond Inn many years ago. One of the interesting (and bizarre) things about Cramond Island is that it hosts an annual international punks picnic. The bands that perform have to carry all their gear and booze across, a not inconsiderable feat I'm sure you will agree.

Am I making this up? Here's the official website.

Found this thread eventually...phew!
Now that Spring is in the air (and Teddygirl's frogs will second that) I'm feeling much more positive and even looking forward (oh yes, I am, Bob!) to the annual BRA park tidy-up. It's good to live in a community that will happily come together for such events. I promise though that I won't get too carried away and ,for example, insist that we all join hands and perform some sort of Wickerman dance :D
Now the sap is rising there must be a few more folk out there with nice things to say about Portobello?

I love to listen in the quiet of the morning or evening and hear the waves break on the beach. You didn't get that in Newington!
I have also recently started to brave the Pulse Centre at Porty Baths and I love that too, in a funny sort of way. (Well, maybe 'love' is too strong a word, but it's great that it's so close by).

I love Porty now because while we have had NIL burglaries in our time in magnolia mansions (porty branch), the previous version of mm (city branch) has been visited again by the toe-rags of the night, who made off with a selection of the kids bikes from the stairs.

So it's bad that it happened but it's good that it didn't happen to us...

I love walking along the Prom.
The beach/sea looked amazing today. My son and I went for our usual Friday swim this afternoon and dondered down Marlborough Street about 3.00ish.
The air was crisp (it was freezing today, wasn't it?), the sky was clear, apart from that awful yellow strip of haze that floats westwards from the chimneys at Cockenzie and the sea was a colour I'd never seen before. A kind of silvery green. The light was incredible.
Even more beautiful, as we left the pool about 5.00pm there was the most brilliant full moon. It was quite pink and seemed to be sitting/floating on the water. I don't suppose our resident photographers happened upon it too?
It was so cold by now but rather than race home we walked along towards Joppa for a bit. Within 10 mins or so the moon was rising and turning yellow. It was just perfect.

oh, and fish and chips from Carlos for tea. Bliss.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this so I thought this would be a nice first thread to reply to.

Portobello's a good place to live. I love the beach, rain or shine, I love that when I was down there near Christmas time lots of people had written 'Merry Christmas' in the sand in a couple of different languages.

I love the community spirit, the shops, and of those I know, the people.

I love this website ...

... and I love the fact I'm no longer a lurker!

Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum as well. I don't live in Portobello now but my mother
and brother still do and I visit them every fortnight.

Anyway, I found the site when I was looking for some info on Wrangholm lodge.
I notice that you have quite a few members on the forum. When I was young
(quite a few years ago now) I used to be friendly with a guy called Graham Arnott.
He probably doesn't live in Portobello now but if he is, it would be nice to hear from him.
